Augusta, GA-The GreenJackets offense did just enough to snap their five game losing streak as they defeated the Lexington Legends 2-1 Monday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The victory improved the GreenJackets to 12-24 on the season.
The star of the game was Domenic Mazza who pitched seven dominant innings to give the GreenJackets a chance late. He gave up only one run off of eight hits and struck out five through seven innings of work.
"I just mixed both sides of the plate," said Mazza. "My changeup was affective today which helped me get through the rough stretch in the seventh."
Legends starter Garrett Davila was just as dominant. He shut out the GreenJackets through six innings, struck out six, and gave up only one hit. He was perfect through the first four innings. A one out walk to Jacob Heyward with one out in the fifth ended his perfect game bid. His no hit bid ended one batter later when Shawon Dunston followed with a single.
Mazza ran into trouble in the top of the seventh when Gabriel Cancel and Emanuel Rivera hit back to back singles to start the inning. Nick Dini followed with a double to score Cancel breaking the scoreless tie. Mazza settled down and retired the next three hitters to get the GreenJackets out of the jam with minimal damage.
"Just limiting the top of the seventh to one run was a big momentum switch for our team," said Mazza.
After falling behind 0-2 in the count, Jacob Heyward battled back and worked a walk to lead off the bottom of the inning. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and then to third on a sacrifice bunt by Shawon Dunston. Cristian Paulino followed with a single to score Heyward and even the score at one. A balk put him on second and then he stole third. With two outs, Brandon Van Horn reached on an error to score Paulino and put the GreenJackets on top. Nolan Riggs came on and pitched a perfect eighth inning in relief and Patrick Ruotolo followed with a perfect ninth to close out the win.
The GreenJackets will be back in action Tuesday morning for the final game of the four game series with the Legends. First pitch is scheduled for 10:35am with the gates opening at 9am. It is Tuesday Brewsday as well as the second Education Day of the season.
D.J. Myers (1-3, 3.34) will start on the mound for the GreenJackets against Travis Eckert (0-2, 5.46) for the Legends.
The 29th consecutive season of professional baseball in Augusta is underway.
