Relaford's three-run homer leads to win

September 2, 2013

With the game tied at 2, shortstop Travious Relaford blasted his second home run of the season over the right field wall at McCormick Field. His three-run homer gave the GreenJackets a 5-2 lead against the Tourists.

Augusta went on to wrap up the regular season with a 6-2 win against the Tourists in Asheville on Sunday. The GreenJackets also finished with an 82-55 record, which is the best overall record in the South Atlantic League.

The GreenJackets got off to an early lead when designated hitter Joey Rapp singled to left field to drive in Jesus Galindo in the first inning. Left fielder Shayne Houck added to Augusta's lead with a solo home run in the second inning.

The Tourists responded with a run in the bottom of the second before the game was suspended on Saturday night due to rain.

The game remained quiet when it picked back up on Sunday until the sixth inning. Asheville's David Bergin doubled to center field to score Francisco Sosa from first and tie the game up at 2.

But the GreenJackets didn't stay down for long.

Right fielder Chuckie Jones led off the seventh inning with a walk, then advanced to second when Houck singled to the left side.

Relaford then put the GreenJackets ahead with a three-run homer. Galindo added a security run later in the inning when third baseman Mitch Delfino singled to left field.

Augusta saw a lot of activity in their bullpen in preparation for the Southern Division Championship. The GreenJackets used seven pitchers in Sunday's game, including Joan Gregorio who made his first appearance since being placed on the disabled list on August 2.

Together the GreenJackets pitching staff combined for five hits, two runs, one walk and nine strikeouts.

With the regular season over, the GreenJackets will turn their focus to the postseason. They will host Game 1 of the Southern Division Championships on Wednesday, September 4 as they face the Savannah Sand Gnats.

The winner of the three game series will go on to face the Northern Division Champion for the title of South Atlantic League Champion.
