Augusta, GA-The GreenJackets pitching staff did not allow a single run beyond the first inning on their way to a 3-1 victory over the Asheville Tourists Sunday evening at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The victory snapped a three game losing streak and improved the GreenJackets to 8-10 in the second half.
The Tourists struck first when Manuel Melendez led off the game with a single. He advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a groundout by Jose Gomez. Willie Abreu singled him home to give Asheville the early 1-0 lead.
After that, Augusta starter Stephen Woods Jr. settled down and cruised for sixth innings allowing only one run off of six hits. He struck out four and walked four. The Tourists threatened several other times and put two runners on base in the first, second, fourth, and fifth innings. Woods was able to force them to strand all of those runners.
The GreenJackets struck back when Asheville starter Riley Pint walked the bases loaded to begin his outing. Skyler Ewing then came up and hit an infield RBI single to tie the game at one. With one out, Jean Angomas came in to score on a wild pitch to put the GreenJackets on top 2-1.
Ewing led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to extend the GreenJackets lead to 3-1. Nolan Riggs relieved Woods to begin the seventh and struck out three without allowing a hit in two shutout innings. Patrick Ruotolo came on and pitched a perfect ninth to earn his eighth save of the season.
The GreenJackets will be back in action Monday night for the final game of the four game series with the Tourists. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm with the gates opening at 6:00pm.
