First-inning homers drop Delmarva

Alonso, Rivera hit back-to-back bombs in 5-3 win

SALISBURY, Md. (June 5, 2018) -- Lazaro Alonso and Marcos Rivera hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, setting the tone in a Grasshoppers win, 5-3, over the Delmarva Shorebirds in a series-opening win on Tuesday night at Arthur W. SALISBURY, Md. (June 5, 2018) -- Lazaro Alonso and Marcos Rivera hit back-to-back home runs in the first inning, setting the tone in a Grasshoppers win, 5-3, over the Delmarva Shorebirds in a series-opening win on Tuesday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The consecutive blasts mark the second time this season that Greensboro (27-28) has accomplished the feat.
Edward Cabrera (2-5) earned the win for the Grasshoppers, working 5.0 innings and allowing two runs on three hits. He struck out five and walked two before making way for reliever Dustin Beggs. Beggs struck out five over 3.0 frames, allowing a run on three hits while walking one. Vincenzo Aiello tossed a scoreless ninth for the save (2). 
Delmarva's Jhon Peluffo (0-1) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits over 5.0 innings, striking out six and walking two. Ryan Wilson and Gray Fenter combined to strike out five over the final 4.0 frames to close the game on the mound for the Shorebirds.
With two outs in the top of the first, Cameron Baranek walked, and Alonso followed with a 2-run home run (4) to left field. Rivera stepped to the plate and homered (6) to right field for a quick 3-0 lead.  
The Shorebirds responded with runs in the second and fourth innings -- including Seamus Curran's solo home run (11) to lead off the second --- to put the Grasshoppers lead to one, 3-2.
Greensboro pulled away in the top of the fifth when Sam Castro led off with a triple, and Thomas Jones followed with a sacrifice-fly for a 4-2 lead. Isael Soto added an RBI-single in the eighth to cap the night for the offense.
The Grasshoppers continue this 3-game series on Wednesday against Delmarva at 7:05 p.m. The team returns to Greensboro on Friday to open its final home stand of the First Half, June 8-14, and tickets for all games are available online at gsohoppers.com.
