The Greenville Drive took the loss for the first of the three-game series as the Aberdeen IronBirds out slugged the home team 9-5.

Aberdeen kicked things off with a three-run inning to take an early lead. Darrell Hernaiz scored the first run after Collin Burns made it to first safely after grounding into a fielder’s choice. Two more runs were added on by the IronBirds when Toby Welk hit an RBI single, and TT Bowens went out on a sacrifice fly.

Greenville struggled at the plate as they were left scoreless as the IronBirds extended their lead in the fifth. Three home runs in the fifth by Ryan Higgins, Hernaiz, and Welk put Aberdeen ahead eight runs over the home team while Greenville was left scoreless for six innings.

Another run was tacked on for the IronBirds in the seventh as John Rhodes made it home putting the team ahead 9-0.

The Drive put their first run on the board in the seventh after Gilberto Jimenez went out on a sacrifice fly to allow Nicholas Northcut to run home. Nathan Hickey was able to score the second run for Greenville thanks to a Phillip Sikes base hit.

The eighth went by scoreless, however Greenville tried to comeback at the bottom of the ninth. Three singles in a row from players Nick Yorke, Tyler McDonough, and Matthew Lugo took runners on base to home plate scoring three runs. However, Aberdeen was able put a stop to the Drive’s fun to secure the first win of the series.

The Drive continues the series with the IronBirds tomorrow at 7:05.
