A nine-batter first and eighth propelled the Fresno Grizzlies (7-8) to a 10-3 victory against the Las Vegas 51s (8-7) in the third game of a four-game series on 90s night at Chukchansi Park. The Grizzlies 17 hits were a new season high, surpassing the 15 on April 13 at Las Vegas. Wilfredo Boscan (0-1) had not given up a run in his first two appearances (9 IP) this season. He allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits through three innings in the loss Thursday night.
The five-run, five-hit first started with an A.J. Reed (3-for-5) RBI single that scored Derek Fisher (3-for-4). The runs piled on the remainder of the inning with Colin Moran (2-for-4) and Jon Kemmer (2-for-4) each driving in two to make the score 5-0 Grizzlies. Preston Tucker (3-for-4), born on July 6, 1990, knocked a hit in the first to extend his hit streak to 11 games, a new Grizzlies team high.
The 51s tallied a two-run second that included a Travis Taijeron solo home run (3) to right field, cutting the Grizzlies lead to 5-2. Reed, born on May 10, 1993, came through with another RBI for Fresno in the home half of the second to give the Grizzlies a four-run lead, 6-2.
RHP Ryan Thompson, born on June 26, 1992, made his Triple-A debut for the Grizzlies in relief in the sixth. In two innings he allowed one run on two hits and no walks with three strikeouts. The Las Vegas run was a solo homer from Jayce Boyd (2-for-3) that cut the Grizzlies lead 6-3 in the seventh (Boyd's first).
A four-run, six-hit eighth sealed the win for the Grizzlies. Moran, born on October 1, 1992, started the inning with a double to deep right that missed going over the wall by inches. Juan Centeno (2-for-4) drove in Moran with a triple to deep center that also just missed sailing out of the park. Tyler White, born on October 29, 1990, then doubled to score Fisher, who was born in 1993. Reed knocked in the final run for Fresno with his third RBI of the night to make the score, 10-3. This was his second three-hit game and first three-RBI game of the season.
Edison Frias (1-1) who was born on December 18, 1990, recorded his first win of the season in five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with five strikeouts. Tyson Perez earned his second save allowing only one hit with one strikeout in the eight and ninth innings.
The Grizzlies take on the 51s in the series finale Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Probable starters are LHP Adam Wilk (2-1, 4.70) for Las Vegas and LHP Brian Holmes (0-0, 5.79) for Fresno, who was born on January 30, 1991.
