Dominguez, Minicozzi homer in loss to Las Vegas

A late rally falls short in a 11-8 defeat
April 5, 2014

LAS VEGAS, Nevada - The addition of San Francisco Giants reliever Jeremy Affeldt to the Fresno Grizzlies roster couldn't calm the bats of the Las Vegas 51s (2-0) as they defeated the Grizzlies (0-2) 11-8 in front of 7,585 fans at Cashman Field Friday night. The two teams combined for 26 hits, nine of which went for extra-bases.

Affeldt, rehabbing a strained right MCL that placed him on the Giants' disabled list on March 23, started the game, but threw only 33 pitches as he surrendered four runs over 0.1 IP to earn the loss. After retiring the leadoff batter, he allowed six straight to reach base before giving way to Mitch Lively (4 ER/3.2 IP).

Fresno pitchers struggled with command early as they issued six of their seven walks in the first four innings. Las Vegas was able to capitalize on the free rides to help score four two-out runs and place 19 runners into scoring position during the course of the night.

The Grizzlies' offense woke up in the final two innings as they put across six runs to climb back within three. Chris Dominguez (1-5, HR, 2 RBI) and Mark Minicozzi (3-4, HR, 2 RBI, 3 R) both hit two-run homers in the final two innings. Andrew Susac (3-4, RBI) and Tyler Colvin (3-5, 2 2B, 2 R) both recorded their third hits of the night in the late rally.

Jake Dunning (1.0 IP), Dan Runzler (1.0) and Heath Hembree (1.0) each turned in scoreless appearances in their first outings of the year.

Mets' No. 1 Prospect Noah Syndergaard, who routinely touched 97 mph on the radar gun, earned his first win of the year as the Mansfield, Texas native allowed two runs on six hits and tallied five strikeouts.

The third game of the series begins at 7:05 p.m. Saturday night and features Giants' No. 2 Prospect Edwin Escobar facing off against 51s right-hander Jacob deGrom.
