Dominguez Powers Grizzlies Past Sacramento

Dominguez's 2-run blast helps Fresno to 7-0 win
August 26, 2013

West Sacramento, Ca.---The Fresno Grizzlies (65-71) used five pitchers to accomplish a 7-0 victory over the Sacramento Rivercats (75-62) on Monday night at Raley Field. Combined with a Las Vegas doubleheader sweep at Colorado Springs, Sacramento is now 3 1/2 games back of Las Vegas in second place in the Pacific Coast League's Pacific Southern Division.

The Grizzlies got all the runs they needed in the second inning. Designated hitter Johnny Monell led off with a walk. First baseman Chris Dominguez (14) followed with a two-run homer to left-center which made it 2-0 Fresno. The visitors tacked on three more runs in the fourth inning as the first five batters reached base safely. Again, it was a leadoff walk by Monell that triggered the rally. The run-producing plays included an RBI single by third baseman Nick Noonan, an RBI single by shortstop Ehire Adrianza, and a sacrifice fly by catcher Jackson Williams.

Right-hander Daryl Maday worked the first three innings for Fresno. He gave up one hit, two walks, two strikeouts, and he hit a batter. In his two starts this year with Fresno, he's worked a total of seven shutout innings. He was pulled due to pitch count (56), and gave way to right-hander Fabio Castillo (3-5). He worked the middle three innings. He issued three hits, one walk, and he fanned three. Left-hander Dan Runzler, right-hander Mason Tobin, and righty Steve Edlefsen each worked one inning, and all had a strikeout to finish Fresno's fourth pitched shutout this year.

Sacramento right-handed starter Bruce Billings (13-7), who is the Pacific Coast League leader in wins, lasted 4 1/3 innings. He allowed eight hits, five runs (all earned), he walked two, and struck out four in addition to the homer he surrendered.

This was Fresno's first shutout at Sacramento since June 18th, 2011 in a 3-0 decision.

Sacramento stranded 13 runners.

Game two of this scheduled four-game series will be Tuesday night at Raley Field at 7:05. Right-hander Justin Fitzgerald (2-6) will pitch for Fresno against Sacramento right-hander Travis Banwart (9-5).

GRIZZLIES PAWS:

Tony Abreu played the first five innings defensively at second base. He's on the San Francisco Giants disabled list (left knee). He was 0-4, and had one chance defensively--an assist on a force play at second.

Angel Pagan (left hamstring) played the entire game in center field, his third rehab contest with Fresno. He was 2-4 with an intentional walk, and had an RBI. He handled two catches.

Fresno leads the season-series over Sacramento 7-6.
