The Fresno Grizzlies (47-39) fell 19-7 to the Salt Lake Bees (48-38) on Wednesday night at Chukchansi Park. The loss snapped a Fresno franchise-record 12-game win streak (6/23-7/4) that began on June 23 with a 7-6 win over Sacramento. The loss also put to end a seven-game streak of a Grizzlies win when the opponent scored first.
Salt Lake took a 3-0 lead in the first on a César Puello (5-for-6) two-run double and a Rey Navarro (2-for-5) RBI single. The Grizzlies quickly tied the contest 3-3 in the bottom of the inning on a Tyler White three-run home run. His 14th homer of the season was crushed to left and scored Derek Fisher and Colin Moran (2-for-5) who both singled to get on.
In the third, Kaleb Cowart (3-for-5) hit a RBI double that scored Ramón Flores (3-for-4) to give the Bees a 4-3 lead. Fresno then went ahead 5-4 in the fourth when A.J. Reed (2-for-4) scored on a Reid Brignac RBI single and Juan Centeno (walk) scored when Tony Kemp (2-for-5) reached on a fielder's choice. Kemp extended his hit streak to a current club-high 13 games with a single in the sixth.
The Bees combined for seven runs in the fifth and sixth to take an 11-5 lead. Puello drove in two with a triple and then scored himself when Navarro reached on a fielder's choice in the fifth. Cowart hit his eighth homer of the season in the sixth, a two run shot to right, before Navarro drove in two more with a double.
The Grizzlies cut the Bees' lead to 11-6 when Reed led off the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run to center. It was his 14th homer of the season but Salt Lake got the run back in the top of the seventh when Shane Robinson (2-for-6) scored on an error. Fresno once again got that run back when Preston Tucker drove home Moran with a triple in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 12-7. Tucker has three triples and a homer on a seven-game hit streak.
A 12-batter, nine-hit, seven-run eighth gave the Bees a 19-7 lead to win the game. Robinson, Flores, Cowart, Carlos Pèrez (3-for-4), and Puello all notched a RBI while Nolan Fontana drove in two. Cowart and Navarro finished the game with four RBI each while Puello had five.
Grizzlies starter Casey Coleman (3-5) suffered the loss having allowed seven runs on five hits and six walks. He struck out three through five innings. Bees starter Daniel Wright (4-4) earned the win in 5.2 IP. He allowed six runs on eight hits and three walks with five strikeouts.
Fresno and Salt Lake will close out the three-game series on Thursday at 7:05 pm. Probable starters are LHP John Lamb (1-0, 3.60) for the Bees against RHP Dean Deetz (1-2, 9.00) for the Grizzlies.
