The Fresno Grizzlies (12-16) fell 4-2 to the Sacramento River Cats (10-17) Thursday night in game three of a four-game series.
The River Cats took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-run homer to left by Orlando Calixte. His fourth home run of the year scored Tim Federowicz (2-for-4) who singled to get on and stole second to put himself in scoring position. The Grizzlies got on the board 2-1 in the fifth when Andrew Aplin scored on a RBI ground out by Derek Fisher (2-for-4), who extended his hit streak to nine games with a double in the third.
Consecutive doubles form Chris Marrero and Justin Ruggiano (3-for-4) gave the River Cats a 3-1 lead in the sixth and also ended the night for Fresno starter David Martinez (0-4). Through five innings and two batters in the sixth, Martinez allowed three runs on seven hits and three walks with four strikeouts.
Sacramento tacked on another run in the seventh with Fresno reliever Kevin Comer on the mound. Austin Slater scored following a double steal and a throwing error to make the score 4-1. The run was unearned for Comer, who allowed one hit and a walk with three strikeouts in an inning and two thirds.
The Grizzlies looked to start a rally in the ninth, but the one run would not be enough. Juan Centeno kept his hit streak alive and moved it to nine games with a RBI single to bring home Jon Kemmer (2-for-4) who doubled.
For the River Cats, starter Chris Stratton did not allow a run on four hits and a walk with six strikeouts in four and a third innings. Reliever Kraig Sitton (2-0) earned the win with two and two thirds pitched. Ryan Webb earned his second save of the season and series with two strikeouts in the ninth.
The Grizzlies look to split the series with the River Cats in the finale on Friday at 7:05 p.m at Chukchansi Park. For Sacramento, RHP Dan Slania (0-3, 9.17) will get the start and RHP Trent Thornton (0-0, 1.50) will be on the mound for Fresno.
