G-Braves Announce Opening Day Weather Guarantee

Chopper to make up for Beauregard Lee's long winter prediction on Groundhog Day
March 28, 2013

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves' mascot, Chopper the Groundhog, has issued a statement regarding the upcoming home opener at Coolray Field. Chopper, distant cousin to Georgia's official weather prognosticator General Beauregard Lee, feels that an early spring is much more conducive to baseball and is offering vouchers to fans to prove it.

"Opening Day will be the real start of spring weather. It will be warm and sunny and temperatures will not dip below 50 degrees," exclaimed the 6-foot, 2-inch groundhog. The G-Braves will take the field for the start of their Fifth Anniversary Season on Thursday, April 4 and Chopper is prepared to offer free tickets to those in attendance if the temperature dips below 50 degrees before the third Inning. Fans will get a voucher for any 2013 home game should Chopper's new prediction not hold true.

"I want to make sure the fans know that I'm looking out for them," said Chopper. "I will forego my budget for nuts and berries to make sure all fans can buy their Opening Day tickets without worrying about the weather. All they need to worry about is making sure they have trained their arms to chop for nine innings of great baseball!"

Gwinnett Braves General Manager North Johnson supports Chopper's endeavor adding, "It's hard to say no to Chopper. When he approached me with the idea, I was hesitant to agree, but Chopper is always putting the fans first and that's what we intend to do. Opening Day is always an exciting time at the ballpark no matter what the weather brings. Yet we stand behind Chopper's guarantee in hopes that fans will continue to support their team as we enter our fifth season here in Gwinnett."

Beauregard Lee, the southern complement to Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shadow early in the morning on February 2 predicting an extended winter season. While spring officially began on March 20, winter seems to be lingering creating cooler temperatures in the area. With Chopper's declaration, fans can bank on a great day for baseball, or at least the chance to have a warmer day later in the season.

The Gwinnett Braves open their fifth season of play on Thursday, April 4, 2013 as they host the Charlotte Knights for a 7:05 PM contest at Coolray Field. The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a T-Shirt courtesy of Georgia Power. Single game tickets as well as 5-game packs and season tickets are on sale now.
