G-Braves Slay Knights in Game One, 11-5

Gwinnett offense erupts for 15 hits to end two-game slide

LAWRENCEVILLE, GA - The Gwinnett Braves (40-43) put together their highest scoring game in over two months as they routed the Charlotte Knights (32-52) by an 11-5 score in game one of the day/night doubleheader on Monday afternoon at BB&T Ballpark. Gwinnett's 11 runs were their most in a game since a 15-0 win over Norfolk back on April 15.

Atlanta Braves' right-hander David Carpenter made his second minor league rehab start with Gwinnett and was dominant in one inning, striking out all three batters he faced. He threw 13 pitches, 10 for strikes.

Meanwhile, after failing to score in the top of the first off Charlotte starter Shawn Hill, the G-Braves came up big in the top of the second. Mark Hamilton led off with a single to right and Joey Terdoslavich (5) followed with a two-run homer to left for a 2-0 lead. Elmer Reyes then singled to center and scored from first on a double to left by Edward Salcedo, raising the lead to 3-0. Jose Constanza capped off the scoring with a double to center, plating Salcedo for a 4-0 lead.

Charlotte quickly got back into the game as Jordan Danks led off the bottom of the second with a double to left-center off Gwinnett reliever Kanekoa Texeira. Josh Phegley singled to center, scoring Danks to cut the Gwinnett lead to 4-1. Matt Tuiasosopo doubled to right, moving to Phegley to third. A sacrifice fly to center field by Blake Tekotte plated Phegley to make it a 4-2 game.

But that would be as close as Charlotte would get. In the top of the third, Hamilton drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a single by Reyes. Salcedo (6) then drilled a long three-run homer to left-center to push the lead to 7-2.

In the top of the fifth, Hamilton (7) delivered a solo homer to left to raise the lead to 8-2.

Charlotte made another run in the bottom of the sixth as Texeira walked Danks to lead off the inning and gave up a two-run homer to Phegley (11). The blast cut the Gwinnett lead to 8-4.

In the top of the seventh, with former University of Georgia pitcher Mitchell Boggs now in for Charlotte, Hamilton drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Reyes brought Hamilton home with a double to left to make it 9-4.

An inning later, Joe Leonard led off with a single to right off Boggs and moved to third on a double to right-center by Jose Yepez. A Constanza single to left scored Leonard for a 10-4 lead and a sacrifice fly to left by Todd Cunningham scored Yepez for an 11-4 advantage. 

Charlotte scored the final run of the game when Tyler Saladino (7) socked a solo homer to left off Gwinnett reliever James Hoyt in the bottom of the ninth.

Texeira (W, 1-0) picked up the win with 5.0 innings of relief work. He allowed four runs on nine hits, walked two and struck out two. Gus Schlosser added a scoreless inning with a strikeout, while Hoyt worked the final 2.0 innings with two hits, one earned run and one strikeout.

Hill (L 2-3) picked up the loss by going 6.0 innings with 10 hits, eight earned runs, one walk and three strikeouts. Boggs worked 2.0 innings with four hits and three earned runs. Maikel Cleto went 1.0 inning with one hit and one strikeout.

The G-Braves were paced offensively by Salcedo, who was 2-for-5 with a double, home run, two runs scored and four RBIs. Constanza, Reyes and Terdoslavich were each 3-for-5, while Hamilton was 2-for-3 with four runs scored.

Phegley went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for Charlotte, while Danks went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Game two of the doubleheader will begin at 7:05 PM tonight in Charlotte. Right-hander Cody Martin (5-6, 3.02) will start for the G-Braves, while right-hander Matt Zaleski (0-0, 0.00) is scheduled to start for the Knights.
