Knights Homer Past G-Braves, 7-5 in 10 innings

Knights hit four homers in comeback win in game two of Monday doubleheader

CHARLOTTE, NC -A two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th by Matt Davidson (16) gave the Charlotte Knights (33-52) a come-from-behind 7-5 victory over the Gwinnett Braves (40-44) Monday night in game two of the day/night doubleheader at BB&T Ballpark.

The homer by Davidson, his second of the night, was one of four homeruns hit by Charlotte in the game.

The walk off win earned the Knights a split of the two games, as the G-Braves rode a 15-hit attack to take game one 11-5.

Things got off to a great start for the G-Braves. Gwinnett took the early lead as Elmer Reyes singled to center off of Charlotte starter Matt Zaleski with one out and Joey Terdoslavich (6) hit a long two-run homer to center for a 2-0 lead. It was the second two-run homer by Terdoslavich on the day.

Charlotte answered in the bottom of the first, Gwinnett starter Cody Martin gave up a one out double to Carlos Sanchez and then a run-scoring single to center to Tyler Saladino, cutting the G-Braves lead to 2-1.

In the top of the second, Edward Salcedo walked and moved to third on a two-out double to left by Ozzie Martinez. Jose Constanza then hit a slow roller toward first. Zaleski fielded the ball, but threw wildly to first and allowedboth runners to score on the play, giving Gwinnett a 4-1 lead. 

But after that, the Charlotte home run barrage began. 

In the bottom of the fourth, Davidson (15) led off with a solo homer to cut the Gwinnett lead to 4-2, while Blake Tekotte (10) delivered a solo shot to right with two outs to make it 4-3.

In the bottom of the fifth, Tyler Saladino (8) drilled a solo homer to left off of Martin to tie the game at 4-4.

The G-Braves battled back to edge ahead in the top of the seventh off of reliever Donnie Veal. With one out, Mark Hamilton was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. Salcedo, who drove in four runs in game one of the doubleheader, then plated Hamilton with a single to center for a 5-4 G-Braves lead.

The lead didn't last, as Miguel Gonzalez led off with a double to right center off of Martin. Gonzalez moved to third on a ground out by Saladino and scored on a two out bloop single to left by Jordan Danks, tying the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the seventh.

The game moved to extra innings, where in the bottom of the 10th, after a one out double to left by Danks, Davidson connected with the game winner off of Gwinnett reliever Terry Doyle.

Martin worked 7.0 innings with 10 hits, five earned runs, one walk and three strikeouts. He also gave up three solo homers. Juan Jaime, in his first outing since being optioned back from Atlanta, worked a scoreless eighth inning with one strikeout. Doyle (L, 0-1) went 1.1 innings with three hits, two earned runs and one home run.

Zaleski, making his first start of the season after being on the disabled list, went 3.0 innings with six hits, four earned runs, one walk and one strikeout. Parker Frazier worked 3.0 innings with two hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Veal pitched 2.0 innings with one hit, one earned run, one walk and three strikeouts. Ryan Kussmaul (W, 2-3) got the win by working the final 2.0 innings with one walk and three strikeouts.

At the plate for Gwinnett, Constanza, Reyes and Martinez were each 2-for-5. Terdoslavich was 1-for-4 with a two run homerun.

For Charlotte, Danks went 2-for-4. Davidson was 2-for-5 with two homeruns and three RBIs. Saladino was 2-for-5 with a solo homer, and Tekotte was 2-for-4 with a solo homer.

Final game of the series will be Tuesday night at 7:05 in Charlotte. LHP Daniel Rodriguez (4-9, 4.81) will get the start for Gwinnett. RHP Deunte Heath (4-1, 2.65) is scheduled to start for the Knights.
