Martin, G-Braves Shut Out Buffalo, 2-0

Cody Martin works seven strong innings in his first-ever Triple-A start

BUFFALO, NY - Cody Martin's first Triple-A start will be one he will never forget. Neither will the Gwinnett Braves.

Martin tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing only two hits as the Gwinnett Braves (29-44) blanked the Buffalo Bisons (36-34), 2-0 on Tuesday night in game two of the four game series at Coca-Cola Field. The G-Braves snapped a five-game losing streak with the win, their sixth shutout of the season.

Called up from Double-A Mississippi earlier in the day, Martin (W, 1-0) also struck out seven and walked only one in his stellar 94-pitch, 58-strike outing.

He was nearly matched by Buffalo starter Dave Bush (L, 7-4), who until the top of the seventh inning, had not allowed a hit. But in that half inning, Bush walked Todd Cunningham, and then after a ground ball hit to second by Joey Terdoslavich forced Cunningham out at second, he hit Ernesto Mejia with a pitch, putting runners on first and second. Brandon Boggs then collected Gwinnett's first hit, a double down the right field line scoring Terdoslavich from second for a 1-0 lead.

The other Gwinnett run came in the top of the eighth when Matt Pagnozzi (3) led off with a solo homer to right off of former G-Braves' pitcher Buddy Carlyle.

The G-Braves' bullpen combo of Joe Beimel and Wirfin Obispo were instrumental in the win as well. Beimel worked 1.0 inning of relief with one hit and two walks. Obispo (S, 1) worked 1.0 inning for his first save of the season. He now has worked 15.0 consecutive innings without allowing a run, spanning 11 outings.

Bush went 6.1 innings with one hit and one earned run. He walked two and struck out five. Carlyle went 1.2 innings with two hits, one earned run and one strikeout. Brad Lincoln pitched 1.0 inning with one walk and one strikeout.

Offensively for Gwinnett, Pagnozzi was 1-for-3 with the homer, Boggs was 1-for-4, and Cunningham was 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to five games.

For Buffalo, Anthony Gose, Mauro Gomez and Ryan Goins each had one hit.

The Gwinnett Braves and Buffalo Bisons continue the four-game series on Wednesday night in Buffalo. Gwinnett will start left-hander Yohan Flande (3-6, 5.82). Left-hander Ricky Romero (0-1, 8.22) gets the start for the Bisons, the Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.
