SYRACUSE, NY - The Gwinnett Stripers broke open a scoreless game with a four-run top of the eighth inning and beat the Syracuse Chiefs 4-0 Friday night in the opening game of the three-game series at NBT Bank Stadium.
Michael Mader started and pitched 6.0 three-hit innings for the Stripers, working around six walks and striking out seven. Miguel Socolovich (W, 4-3) went 2.0 innings with one hit, one walk and one strikeout. Philip Pfeifer finished off Gwinnett's 11th shutout of the year with a scoreless ninth, giving up one hit.

The Stripers tallied seven hits against Syracuse starter Phillips Valdez but couldn't push across a run over the first seven innings. Valdez was pulled after 101 pitches and was replaced by Tim Collins in the eighth.
Gwinnett greeted Collins with six straight hits. Austin Riley and Rio Ruiz hit singles on the first two pitches of the inning, and Dustin Peterson followed with a single to right scoring Riley for a 1-0 lead. A single to left by Xavier Avery loaded the bases with no one out, and Sean Kazmar Jr. ripped a ball to left-center scoring Ruiz to make it 2-0. Kazmar was caught in a rundown between first and second and was tagged out on the play, but Peterson was able to cross the plate for a 3-0 lead. Chris Stewart followed a single to left scoring Avery from third for a 4-0 lead.
Collins (L, 2-4) tossed 1.0 inning with six hits, four earned runs and one strikeout. Chris Smith went 1.0 inning with one hit. Valdez struck out six and walked one over his 7.0 scoreless, seven-hit frames.
Offensively, the Stripers had 14 hits on the night, giving them 32 hits over the past two games. Riley was 4-for-5 with a double and a run scored. Peterson went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI to extend his on-base streak to 25 games. Ruiz, Kazmar and Stewart each added two hits, with Kazmar recording the 499th and 500th hits of his Gwinnett career.
For Syracuse, Andrew Stevenson was 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base.
The Stripers (55-59) and Chiefs (49-68) play game two of the three-game series Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. at NBT Bank Stadium. Gwinnett has not announced a starting pitcher. Syracuse will start right-hander Austin Voth (4-8, 4.77 ERA). Tony Schiavone has the play-by-play call on 97.7 and 93.5 FM "The Other Side of the River" beginning at 6:35 p.m.
