Giolito named SAL Pitcher of the Week

July 1, 2014

HAGERSTOWN M.D. - The South Atlantic League announced on Monday that Suns RHP Lucas Giolito was named the league's Pitcher of the Week for the week spanning from June 23 - 29. It is the second week in a row the Suns have had a pitcher named as the league's Pitcher of the Week.

Giolito made one start during the week, which was in game two of a double-header on Thursday June 26 at home against Lexington. In that outing he tossed six scoreless innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out a career high nine hitters to earn the win. Giolito was named to the 16th annual SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game last week, which will take place at Target Field in Minneapolis on Sunday July 13. He is just one of two players on the U.S. roster currently playing at the full season low-A level.

Giolito is in his first season with the Suns, and in his third season as a professional after getting drafted by the Nationals with their first round pick (#16 overall) in the 2012 draft out of Harvard-Westlake (CA) High School. This season Giolito is 3-2 with a 2.30 ERA in 12 starts. He has struck out 61 hitters in 54.2 innings worked, and has held opponents to a .182 batting average.
