SALISBURY, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (9-4) lost a marathon 1-0 pitchers duel to the Delmarva Shorebirds (6-7) in 15 innings on Wednesday night in front of 1,315 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. As a result of the 15-inning game, the second game of the double-header originally scheduled for Wednesday night after a rainout on Tuesday has been postponed with the date to be determined.
Delmarva was able to break the scoreless tie on Wednesday night in the bottom of the 15th with a two-out rally. First baseman Trey Mancini began the rally by hitting a ground ball single to right. That was followed by SS Jeff Kemp drawing a walk, and after a pitching change 3B Drew Dosh finally drove in the lone run of the game by smacking a line drive single to left to plate Mancini.
In total 10 pitchers were used between the two teams, with RHP Jimmy Yacabonis (1-0) picking up the win for the Shorebirds. He went 1.2 innings, allowing one hit while striking out two. LHP Justin Thomas (0-2) suffered the loss for the Suns. He pitched 2.2 innings, and was charged with the one earned run on three hits and three walks while striking out one. RHP Lucas Giolito started for Hagerstown and went five innings, giving up two hits and two walks while striking out six.
In the first game of the series Delmarva totaled 11 hits as the Shorebirds cruised to a 9-2 win. Delmarva put together a four-run inning in the third and a three-run inning in the eighth. In the third three straight singles to start the frame followed by a two-run triple off the bat of RF Mike Yastrzemski did most of the damage. In the eighth a leadoff double by Kemp followed by a triple by Dosch set the stage for the Shorebirds to blow the game open.
The two Hagerstown runs in the game were both driven in by one swing of the bat from CF Rafael Bautista in the second inning. He laced a ground ball double to right field off of Delmarva starting RHP Austin Urban, who wound up pitching 4.2 innings and giving up seven hits. RHP Dylan Rheault (2-0) threw 3.1 scoreless innings in relief for the Shorebirds to earn the win. Starting RHP Nick Pivetta (2-1) suffered the loss for the Suns.
In total Delmarva outscored Hagerstown in the series 10-2, and out-hit the Suns 22-18. The Suns next head back home to Hagerstown to begin a three game series with the Lakewood BlueClaws that starts on Thursday, April 17. The Suns will send RHP Austin Voth (0-1) to the mound for his third start and appearance of the year. He will square off against RHP Alejandro Arteaga (1-1) for the BlueClaws. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.
