April 17, 2014

HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (10-4) took advantage of six errors committed by the Lakewood BlueClaws (4-9) on Thursday night to roll to a 13-3 win. With the win the Suns record improves to 5-0 against the BlueClaws this season.

Four of the six Lakewood errors were committed in the first two innings, and they led to four unearned runs. In the first CF Denard Span led off with a walk, followed by a single by SS Wilmer Difo. Following Difo's single, a fielding error by RF Dylan Cozens allowed Span to advance to third and Difo to second. A missed catch error by 1B Willians Astudillo let Span score from third and Difo move to third. Difo wound up scoring when DH Drew Ward grounded into a force out to make it 2-0.

In the second Hagerstown plated five runs and sent nine hitters to the plate. The Suns went up 10-0 before Lakewood was finally able to get on the board with a run in the fourth. The biggest hit of the night for Hagerstown was a bases-clearing three-run double by 3B John Wooten in the third. Wooten finished the night with two hits in five at-bats and four runs driven in.

Span also had a big night playing in his first ever game in a Suns uniform. The starting center fielder for the Washington Nationals who was in Hagerstown for a rehab assignment played five innings and had one hit in two official at-bats, with one RBI, two walks, and three runs scored. In total the Suns piled up 15 hits, all but two of them singles.

Getting the win for Hagerstown was RHP Wander Suero (1-0), who pitched five innings in relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits while walking one and striking out three. RHP Austin Voth started for Hagerstown and went four innings, surrendering one earned on three hits and two walks while striking out four. Starting RHP Alejandro Arteaga (1-2) suffered the loss for Lakewood. He pitched two innings, giving up seven runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk.

These two teams will battle again Friday evening in Hagerstown when the Suns will send RHP Dixon Anderson (0-0) to the mound for his second start and third appearance of the year. He will square off against RHP Ranfi Casimiro (0-1) for Lakewood. Span is expected to make another rehab start in Hagerstown tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35pm.
