Suns open homestand with 4-1 win over Kannapolis

August 1, 2013

HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (24-16, 62-45) used a couple timely hits and a strong starting pitching performance to defeat the Kannapolis Intimidators (15-25, 42-66) on Thursday night 4-1. The win gives the Suns a 4-3 edge in the season series against Kannapolis.

With two outs and the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth, DH Mike McQuillan hit a triple with 2B Tony Renda standing a first base to put Hagerstown ahead for good. It was McQuillan's only hit of the night, and his third triple this season.

The Suns added to their lead in the seventh. Right Fielder Brandon Miller began the inning by hitting an infield single. Two batters later, 3B Khayyan Norfork hit a single to right and advanced to second on a throw to third that was unsuccessful in getting out Miller. Miller was then able to score from third on a wild pitch, which also allowed Norfork to advance to third. Norfork scored to round out the Suns scoring for the night when catcher Pedro Severino grounded into a force out.

Hagerstown first got on the board in the third inning. First Baseman Estarlin Martinez led off with a walk, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Severino. Shortstop Stephen Perez then drove Severino home by hitting a line drive double into center field. Kannapolis responded the next half inning when 1B Brent Tanner went yard for his seventh homerun of the season. Tanner entered the game in the bottom of the second inning as a defensive replacement for starting 1B Keon Barnum, who left due to injury.

LHP Brett Mooneyham (7-3) got the start and the win for the Suns. He pitched seven innings, giving up one earned run on four hits and one walk while striking out six. RHP Derek Self struck out five over the final two innings to record his third save of the season. RHP Kyle Hansen (3-7) suffered the loss for Kannapolis. He went six innings and gave up two earned runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three.

The Suns and Intimidators continue their series at Municipal Stadium on Friday, August 2. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05p.m. Hagerstown will send RHP Ian Dickson (2-2, 5.19) to the mound for his sixth start of the season. He will be opposed by RHP Adam Lopez (1-3, 3.25) for Kannapolis.
