Suns snap skid with 8-2 win over Intimidators

HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (31-23) returned home to the friendly confines of Municipal Stadium and snapped their four-game losing streak with an 8-2 win over Kannapolis Intimidators (19-36). The Suns beat the Intimidators for the third time in four tries this season and upped their home record to 15-9. 

 

The Suns got on the board early in the bottom of the first. Second baseman Tony Renda led off the inning with a double and proceeded to steal third. He wound up scoring on 1B Shawn Pleffner's sacrifice fly to left field making it 1-0 Hagerstown.

 

The Suns plated a pair of runs in the third. Catcher Pedro Severino singled to start the frame. After a flyout by LF Wes Schill, Renda smacked his second double of the game to put runners on second and third. They both scored on 3B Khayyan Norfork's single, extending the Suns lead to 3-0.

 

Two more runs crossed the plate for Hagerstown in fifth inning. Left fielder Wes Schill started the inning by reaching on an error by Intimidators 1B Patrick Palmeiro. Renda followed up with a single, his third hit of the game. After two flyouts, RF Brandon Miller singled to load the bases for CF Will Piwnica-Worms, who singled home Schill and Renda to make it 5-0 Suns. 

 

The Suns increased their lead to 8-0 in the seventh. With two outs Worms drew a walk, which was followed up by a single by DH Estarlin Martinez. Shortstop Stephen Perez then hit an infield single to the pitcher which Worms scored on when RHP Zachary Isler's throw sailed wide of first base. Martinez then scored on a wild pitch by Isler, which was followed up by Perez scoring on a throwing error by 2B Micah Johnson.

 

Kannapolis put up a run each in the eighth and ninth. In the eighth, 3B Eric Grabe drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. He advanced to third on a groundout by DH Kale Kiser and later scored on a groundout by Johnson. With one out in the ninth CF Josh Richmond singled and advanced to third on a double by catcher Michael Marjama. Richmond then scored on a groundout by Palmeiro, setting the final score at 8-2.

 

RHP Brian Rauh (3-2) got the win in relief for Hagerstown. Rauh pitched 4.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits and a walk while striking out three. RHP Anthony Bucciferro (0-1) suffered the loss for the Intimidators. Bucciferro went 4.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on nine hits while striking out four.  

 

The Suns and Intimidators will continue their series with a double-header Wednesday evening with two seven inning games being played. In the first game RHP Dixon Anderson (4-2) will get the nod for Hagerstown, making his twelfth start of the season. He will matchup against RHP Braulio Oritz (0-1), who is making his first start of the season. In game two LHP Brett Mooneyham (1-0) will make his first start since April 17 and his fourth overall of the season. LHP Jefferson Olacio (1-7) will start for Kannapolis, making his eleventh start of the season. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 6:05 p.m with game two to start 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
