Suns take series at West Virginia with 4-1 win

June 9, 2013

CHARLESTON, W.V. - The only scoring on Sunday afternoon was done in the sixth inning, as the Hagerstown Suns (33-26) outscored the West Virginia Power (33-29) 4-1 in the frame, and held on for the win and the series triumph. The win puts the Suns 1.5 games ahead of the Power in the South Atlantic League Northern Division standings.

Hagerstown wound up batting around in the sixth. The first batter to reach base was CF Will Piwnica-Worms, who drew a one-out walk. Left fielder Estarlin Martinez then reached on a throwing error by Power 3B Eric Wood, which allowed Piwnica-Worms to advance to second. Piwnica-Worms scored from second when SS Stephen Perez doubled to left, breaking the scoreless tie. Back-to-back sacrifice flies brought in the second and third runs of the inning, and 2B Khayyan Norfork brought home the final Suns run when he sent a two-out double to right.

In the bottom half of the inning West Virginia managed to pick up its only run when 1B Walker Gourley smashed a line drive homerun over the left field wall. It was Gourley's third homerun of the season, and was one of just four hits the Power had in the game.

RHP Ivan Pineyro (5-3) got the start and win for Hagerstown. He threw six innings, and allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out four. RHP Jhondaniel Medina (0-1) suffered the loss in relief for West Virginia. He pitched 0.2 innings, and surrendered all four runs on one hit and two walks while striking out two. RHP Travis Henke pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to collect his second save of the season.

The Suns will next begin a four-game series with the Hickory Crawdads (34-27) on Monday, June 10 in Hagerstown. LHP Matt Purke (0-0) will be making his third start of the season for the Suns. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
