HAGERSTOWN, MD (June 14, 2019) - After allowing seven runs over the final four innings, the Suns fell to the West Virginia Power 8-7 in 11 innings at Municipal Stadium Friday.
The Power (33-34) scored two in the eighth and two in the ninth to send the game to extra innings, and then two more in the 10th and one in the 11th to finally secure the victory. That winning run was Ryan Ramiz, who came across on a wild pitch.
A one-out RBI single from Joseph Rosa scored the go-ahead run for West Virginia in the 10th off of Jared Brasher (L, 1-1), and then the second run in the frame came home on a passed ball.
The Suns (30-37), however, began a rally of their own in the tenth when a Gilbert Lara RBI single put runners on the corners with one out in a 7-6 game. After a strikeout, Israel Pineda hit a fly ball to left that looked like it would end the game, but it somehow fell in for an RBI base-hit to tie the game. The Suns weren't able to keep the rally going to walk it off, and are now 1-6 in extra innings this season after failing to score in the 11th against David Ellingson (W, 3-2).
Francys Peguero allowed just one run on four hits on the night while striking out five and walking just one batter. It is the sixth quality start of the season for the righty, who lowered his season ERA to 2.54.
On the offensive side, the Suns gave the fans an early fireworks show - a preview of the one they would see after the game. After a Cody Wilson sacrifice fly got Hagerstown on the board in the third, Israel Pineda hit a two-run moonshot to left in the fourth, his fifth long ball of the season, to put the Suns up 3-1. That homer came off of West Virginia starter Deivy Florido, who allowed three runs on six hits over five innings.
Josias De Los Santos then entered for the Power in the sixth and was immediately greeted by another long ball. This time it was Lara who cushed his ninth dinger of the year to left-center field to put the Suns up 4-1. Then after a two-out walk to Kyle Marinconz, Cole Daily delivered an RBI single to extend the lead to four. De Los Santos was then able to reign it in and put together three consecutive scoreless innings to send the game into extras.
The only run against Peguero came on a Bobby Honeyman solo home run in the fourth. Honeyman ended up with three of West Virginia's four hits against the Hagerstown starter.
West Virginia struck again in the eighth against Ryan Williamson as Julio Rodriguez sent a two-run homer into the bullpen in the right-center field. However, Williamson settled down after that and finished the eighth, and then came back out and got the first two outs of the ninth. Jared Brasher then entered the game with a man on first and two down and allowed back-to-back singles, the second of which was an RBI single from Rodriguez. Brasher then had two strikes on Honeyman, but a wild pitch scored J.R. Davis to tie the game.
The Suns and Power will play a doubleheader tomorrow, with the first game starting at 4:05 p.m., and game two beginning approximately 30 minutes after the first one ends. Both games will be seven-inning affairs. Hagerstown will send RHP Ryan Tapani (3-4, 3.92 ERA) to the mound in game one to appose RHP Clay Chandler (6-3, 3.56 ERA) for West Virginia. The Suns have not yet named a game-two starter, but the Power will hand the ball to RHP Ryne Inman for the second game.
