Suns Walk-off Fireflies 3-2 in 10 Innings

Hagerstown squeezes Columbia in series opener

Hagerstown, MD -  Armond Upshaw laid down a safety squeeze in the bottom of the 10th inning to score Jeyner Baez and help the Hagerstown Suns walk-off the Columbia Fireflies 3-2 on Friday night at Historic Municipal Stadium. The Suns are now 26-40 overall and will play the second game of the series on Saturday with a 6:05 PM first pitch.

The Fireflies scored an early run off Suns starter Jackson Tetreault. Raphael Gladu led off the game with a double off the right-center field fence and Blake Tiberi walked to put runners at first and second. With one out, Jeremy Vasquez singled back up the middle to plate Gladu from second and give the Fireflies a 1-0 lead. Columbia increased their lead to 2-0 in the second inning as Wuilmer Becerra lead off with a double to left field and was brought around to score with a two-out single to center by Hansel Moreno.
The Suns cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second inning against Firelflies starter Zac Grotz. Nick Banks led off with a double and moved to third on a fly ball to center by Omar Meregildo. Banks scored on a single to left by Jake Scudder to halve the Fireflies' lead, 2-1.
 
The Suns tied the game in the bottom half of the eighth inning after the first two batters Grotz faced were retired. Luis Garcia lined a two-out triple down the right field line and was plated when Aldrem Corredor singled on a ball that didn't leave the infield. Aaron Ford entered out of the bullpen for the Fireflies and retired Banks to end the threat and the inning.
 
The Suns walked-off in the bottom of the tenth inning against Ford. With Jeyner Baez starting the inning on second base, Kameron Esthay bunted Baez to third. Baez scored on a safety squeeze from Armond Upshaw to give the Suns a 3-2 walk-off victory.
Tetreault pitched seven innings in a no decision, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out seven. Steven Fuentes (2-1) pitched three scoreless innings in relief, with one hit, no walks and struck out one batter in his second win of the season.
Notes: The Suns are now 8-6 in the month of June… Hagerstown has won back to back games while being tied after the eighth inning and are 2-3 in that situation… Suns are 3-2 in extra-inning contests this season… Tetreaut had his longest start of the season and career with 7.0 innings pitched… He tied Nick Raquet who accomplished it twice this season… Garcia recorded his 19th multi-hit game which is the most on the team… Corredor had two hits and has 15 multi-hit games this season… Scudder recorded his fourth multi-hit game… The Suns and Fireflies will play the second game of the series on Saturday with a 6:05 PM first pitch… Saturday night is Star Wars Night at Historical Municipal Stadium… On the mound for the Suns will be RHP Matt DeRosier (2-4, 4.19 ERA) and pitching for the Fireflies will be RHP Chris Viall (2-3, 3.14)… The broadcast can be heard, starting with the pregame show at 5:50 PM on www.hagerstownsuns.com by going to multimedia and "Listen Live" which also has downloads for a free app on the iPhone, iPad, Blackberry, and Android...
