Capital BlueCross Boardwalk Officially Dedicated

Capital BlueCross Boardwalk to be open to public during daytime hours
August 14, 2009
The Harrisburg Senators, the City of Harrisburg and officials from Capital BlueCross dedicated the newly-named boardwalk at Metro Bank Park and said the boardwalk will now be open for use to the general public.

Harrisburg Mayor Stephen R. Reed, Senators president Kevin Kulp, and Capital BlueCross President and CEO Bill Lehr made the announcement at a press conference today at Metro Bank Park.

Mayor Reed said the boardwalk, now officially called the "Capital BlueCross Boardwalk", is one of the newest additions to the major city-conducted $41 million upgrade of Metro Bank Park. The Capital BlueCross Boardwalk is a common area of Metro Bank Park that spans the entire outfield where fans can sit or stand to watch baseball games. The new viewing area now allows fans to watch all the action of the Harrisburg Senators from any location in the outfield.

Reed said the name was purchased through a sponsorship agreement between the Harrisburg Senators and Capital BlueCross. The city is the ballpark owner.

"Capital BlueCross is pleased to help add a healthy family fun element to Metro Bank Park by sponsoring the Boardwalk," said Capital BlueCross President & CEO Bill Lehr. "With the addition of the Capital BlueCross Boardwalk, fans of the Harrisburg Senators can now enjoy watching their favorite players from a spectacular vantage point in the outfield. Plus, open access to stroll the Boardwalk gives the public one more great reason to visit City Island. The Harrisburg Senators experience just keeps getting more and more attractive, and that is a credit to the city and this baseball team's front office and entire organization."

"The Capital BlueCross Boardwalk is absolutely one of the features of this renovation that will make the new Metro Bank Park so unique as it ultimately will extend down the third base line, around home plate, and up the first base line," said Harrisburg Senators Team President Kevin Kulp. "It really opens up the park and will allow fans to move about and enjoy the game from different vantage points. We are extremely happy and proud to partner with Capital BlueCross on the Boardwalk and look forward to working with them as we develop further ideas of ways to program and utilize the space so that all of Harrisburg can enjoy it for years to come."

Reed said that the Capital BlueCross Boardwalk will be open to public traffic for walkers from 8:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on weekdays and weekends, allowing anyone who visits Harrisburg's City Island to enjoy views of the ballpark and the city skyline from the boardwalk free of charge.

Reed said hours of public access for the boardwalk will be modified on game days, as necessary. He also said that once Phase 2 of the major renovation project begins this September, the boardwalk will likely be closed to the public as a public safety concern due to construction. However, once construction is complete next spring, the boardwalk will again reopen daily for public use.
