HARTFORD- Evan Grills and three Hartford relievers combined on a three-hitter to pitch the Yard Goats to a 3-0 win over the Erie Seawolves Wednesday night, before 5,323 at Dunkin' Donuts Park. It was Hartford's first win against the Detroit Tigers affiliate in five tries and sets up the rubber game of the three-game seriesThursday night. The Yard Goats pitching staff turned in its second shutout of the season, one night after allowing 12 runs and 14 hits.
Dom Nuñez staked the Goats to a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning with a two-run homer to the back of the upper deck in right-center that hit off the Pepsi sign. Chris Rabago scored on a single by Wes Rogers in the fifth inning, after opening the frame with a triple to left-center. Rabago had two hits for Hartford.
Making his second start for the Yard Goats, Grills pitched five innings and allowed two hits. The left-hander walked one and struck out six, before turning the game over to the bullpen.
After Erie loaded the bases on walks in the seventh inning, reliever Scott Griggs entered with one out and enticed A.J. Simcox to ground into a 4-6-3 double play. Griggs pitched a perfect eighth, before handing the ball to Matt Pierpont, who recorded his league-leading 16th save of the season.
Beau Burrows, the Tigers first-round draft choice in 2015, suffered the loss. He allowed all three runs on four hits over five innings. He walked three and struck out one.
The series wraps up on Thursday night at 7:05 at Dunkin' Donuts Park. RHP Ryan Castellani will pitch for the Yard Goats against RHP Anthony Castro for Erie. The game will be televised on Vantage Sportsnet, broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and streamed on newsradio.1410.com and MiLB.com.
