PORTLAND, ME- Mylz Jones slugged a home run and two doubles and Ryan Metzler added three doubles and two RBI, lifting the Hartford Yard Goats to a 5-2 win over the Portland Sea Dogs, Wednesday night. Hartford (25-20) defeated the Red Sox affiliate for the ninth straight time and leads the season series 11-2.
Peter Lambert pitched 5 2/3 innings to notch his second straight win (3-1). He allowed two runs on eight hits, struck out five and did not walk a batter. Logan Cozart pitched two scoreless innings and closer Matt Pierpont recorded his league-leading 13th save and eighth straight.
Despite striking out 13 times, Hartford managed eight extra base hits among its 10 with six doubles and two home runs.
The Yard Goats took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Brian Mundell opened the frame with a home run to left center. Following a single by Sam Hilliard and a double by Jones, Scott Burcham delivered a sacrifice fly and Metzler an RBI-double.
Portland scored a run in the fifth on an RBI-single by Jantzen Witte. Metzler's second RBI-double of the night, made it 4-1. But on his 100th pitch of the game, Lambert served up a home run to Austin Rei into the net above the "Maine Monster" in left, as Portland cut the lead in half. Lambert departed and Marc Magliaro entered to get the third out.
Lambert pitched out of a bases loaded one-out jam in the first inning, throwing 29 pitches in the frame. He wiggled off the hook in the third inning, getting a fly out with runners and second and third.
Jones had a home run, two doubles, three runs scored and an RBI and Metzler three doubles and two RBI to lead the Hartford attack. Josh Ockimey and Jeremy Rivera each had two hits for Portland (15-28).
The Yard Goats go for the sweep of the three-game series on Thursday morning at 11:00. RHP Chris Jensen will pitch for the Yard Goats against RHP Teddy Stankiewicz for Portland. The game will be broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and streamed on newsradio.1410.com and MiLB.com.
