HARTFORD- A two-run home run by Mandy Alvarez in the top of the 11th inning off of reliever Matt Pierpont snapped a 2-2 tie and lifted the second-place Trenton Thunder to a 4-2 extra inning win over the Hartford Yard Goats Sunday night, before 6,850 at Dunkin Donuts Park. It was the 36th sellout crowd of the season for Hartford, which has played to capacity crowds on 18 dates.
The home run by Alvarez, below the video board in left field, was his second of the game and 10th of the season. He put the Yankees affiliate on the board with a homer off of starter Ryan Castellani in the sixth inning. The Yard Goats had taken a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Brian Mundell and an RBI-double by Ryan Metzler.
Trenton (63-49) tied the contest in the seventh on a double by Jhalan Jackson and a two-out single by Rashad Crawford.
Castellani turned in his second quality start for Hartford (52-59),allowing two runs on five hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out four. Lefty reliever Brian Moran pitched two scoreless innings, striking out four, before Alvarez lowered the boom with his two-run blast against Pierpont.
The Yard Goats, who dropped the rubber game of the three-game series, turned in two spectacular double plays. Left-fielder Omar Carrizales made a diving catch in foul territory, before doubling up Trey Amburgey at first base. Pierpont kept the score tied in the 10th, making a diving catch on a bunt attempt, before throwing out Wendell Rijo at second from a seated position.
Alvarez had his second straight three-hit game for Trenton, including two home runs and three RBI. The Trenton bullpen, meanwhile, closed the door on the Yard Goats, as relievers James Reeves, Matt Wivinis and Sosebee retired 22 of 24 batters.
Following an off day on Monday, the Yard Goats open a three-game series at Harrisburg on Tuesday night at 6:30.   The game will be broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and streamed on newsradio1410.iheart.com and MiLB.com. RHP Jesus Tinoco will pitch for Hartford, while RHP Wirkin Estevez will start for the Senators. The Yard Goats return home to Dunkin' Donuts Park on Friday night, August 10 at 7:05 to host the Bowie Baysox.
