HARTFORD- Former major league pitcher Brandon Beachy and two relievers combined on a four-hitter to lift the Richmond Flying Squirrels to a 5-1 victory over the Hartford Yard Goats, before 4,507 at windswept Dunkin' Donuts Park Monday night. Chris Shaw and Ryan Howard hit homers and Brock Stassi added two run-scoring singles for Richmond (6-3).
Yard Goats shortstop Alex Trejo had two doubles to lift his league-leading average to .459.
Beachy, attempting to make a comeback, following two Tommy John surgeries, notched his first victory of the season. He allowed one hit over five innings, walked one and struck out four. Yoanys Quiala, just added to the roster on Monday, pitched three innings of relief, but was removed in the ninth, after walking the first two Yard Goats hitters. A fly out and wild pitch by reliever Connor Overton led to Hartford's (4-8) only run, before he registered a strike out to end the game with a runner at third base.
Shaw's home run in the second inning into the upper deck in right off of Hartford starter and loser Jack Wynkoop furnished the Flying Squirrels with their first run.. A two-out double by Levi Michael and run-scoring single by Hamlet Marte in the third inning added to the score. Howard slugged a homer to left in the sixth and Stassi delivered RBI-singles in the sixth and eighth innings. Wynkoop, who suffered the loss, allowed four runs in six innings. He walked one and struck out five in his longest outing of the season.
Game two of the series is Tuesday at 7:05 PM. It will be a battle of right handed pitchers with Brandon Gold on the mound for the Yard Goats and Alfred Gutierrez for Richmond. The game will be broadcast on News Radio 1410AM, on 100.9 FM, in Spanish on 1120AM and on the Internet on newsradio1410.iheart.com and on MiLB.com.
