Yard Goats Drop One-Run Game to Curve

Hartford, CT- Altoona Curve starter Trevor McGough hurled five innings and allowed just one run with nine strikeouts, as the Pirates affiliate defeated the Hartford Yard Goats 2-1 in a five-inning rain-shortened game on Friday night at Dunkin’ Donuts Park. Yard Goats infielder Jose Gomez just missed hitting the go-ahead home run in the fifth inning, as his line drive down the right field line was foul by just inches. Yard Goats starter Garrett Schilling hurled five solid innings and permitted just two runs on six hits. Coco Montes continued his impressive homestand with two hits, including his league leading 24th double.

The Yard Goats scored the first run of the game in the first inning on Coco Montes two-out RBI single off Curve lefty Trevor McGough. Sean Bouchard cracked his 19th double down the left field line to set up the run. Later in the inning Montes hit a sharp single to left field, scoring Bouchard from second base, and giving Hartford a 1-0 lead.

The Curve tied the game in the second inning with a two-out rally. Schilling retired the first five hitters of the game, and got two quick outs in the second inning. However, Cal Mitchell ripped a double to right centerfield and Connor Kaiser walked. Then, Arden Pabst singled to left field, scoring Mitchell and tying the game at 1-1.

Altoona took a 2-1 lead with a run in the third inning with a pair of doubles. Jonah Davis led off the inning with a double off the right center field fence off Garrett Schilling. The Yard Goats righty retired the next two batters including a strikeout. However, Mason Martin belted a double and Davis scored, giving Altoona a 2-1 lead.

The Yard Goats had the potential tying run in scoring position in the fifth inning. Todd Czinege doubled with one out as he smashed one off the right field fence. Jose Gomez just missed a home run on a line drive which was foul. McGough struck out the final two batters to earn his first win. The umpires ordered the field to be covered after the Yard Goats batted, and the game never resumed as Altoona was credited with a rain-shortened victory.

The Yard Goats continue a 12-game homestand at Dunkin’ Donuts Park on Saturday night with a doubleheader (4:05 PM) against the Altoona Curve (Pittsburgh Pirates).
