Yard Goats Eight-Game Road Win-Streak Snapped in New Jersey

Somerset, New Jersey- Ezequiel Tovar had four hits and drove in two runs but it was not enough as the Yard Goats had their eight-game road win-streak snapped with a 7-4 loss to the Somerset Patriots on Thursday night at TD Bank Ballpark in Somerset, New Jersey. The Yankees affiliate smashed three home runs, including the go-ahead three-run shot by Josh Breaux in the sixth inning to defeat Hartford for the first time in three games. The victory moved Somerset into a two-way tie for first place in the Northeast Division with three games remaining in the first half. The winner of the series will clinch the First Half of the Eastern League’s Northeast Division, and earn a spot in the playoffs in September. The Yard Goats have won 19 of their past 23 road games.

The Yard Goats scored the first run of the game two batters into the contest off Somerset starter Sean Boyle. Daniel Montano led off the game with a single, and scored on an RBI double by Ezequiel Tovar to make it 1-0 Hartford. The Patriots responded with a two-run homer by Jeison Rosario in the bottom of the first and it was 2-1 Somerset after one inning. Hartford starter Mitch Kilkenny retired 10 of the next 11 batters and kept the Yard Goats in the game.

The Yard Goats tied the game in the sixth inning as Michael Toglia led off the inning with a solo home run. He 13th homer of the season sailed over the right field fence to make it a 2-2 game.

Again, Somerset answered. Anthony Volpe led off the sixth inning with a walk and Elijiah Dunham reached on a throwing error putting runners at the corners. Josh Breaux followed with a three-run homer, giving the Patriots a 5-2 lead. The Yard Goats made it 5-3 as Daniel Cope led off the seventh inning with a home run. Hartford had runners at second and third when the inning ended. The Patriots added two runs in the bottom of the eighth, including a solo homer by Anthony Volpe to make it 7-3. Tovar’s RBI single in the ninth scored Isaac Collins to make it 7-4.

The Yard Goats continue their six-game series on Friday night (7:05 PM) at TD Bank Ballpark in Somerset, NJ. RHP Michael Baird will start for the Yard Goats and RHP Randy Vazquez will start for the Patriots.
