PORTLAND, ME- It's as if the Portland Sea Dogs said, "enough." Losers of nine straight to the Hartford Yard Goats the Red Sox affiliate salvaged the finale of a three-game series with a 12-3 victory over Hartford on Thursday at Hadlock Field. Every Portland starter had at least one hit in unleashing a 15-hit attack. It was only Hartford's third loss in 14 games against Portland. The game was interrupted in the top of the eighth, when the umpires ordered both clubs off the field, as a drone flew over head. The contest resumed after one minute.
Leading 3-2 in the third inning, the Sea Dogs sent 14 men to the plate and erupted for eight runs on eight hits, helped by four walks by pitchers Chris Jensen and Parker French. Josh Ockimey's three-run home run and two-run double by Nick Lovullo highlighted the inning.
Jensen, making his first start for Hartford (25-21), failed to retire a batter in the third inning. He allowed 10 runs on 10 hits and walked three. French, making his first relief appearance as a professional, permitted two runs in four innings of work, walking six and striking out three. Hartford pitching allowed a season-high 11 walks, one shy of the franchise record.
Portland (16-28) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a three-run home run by Jantzen Witte. The Yard Goats scored two runs in the third on a home run by Chris Rabago into the screen above the "Maine Monster" and on an RBI-single by Brendan Rodgers. But Sea Dogs starter Teddy Stankiewicz settled down after that inning. He pitched a season-high seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits. The Red Sox second round draft choice in 2013 tied a season-high with seven strike outs.
Omar Carrizales and Rodgers each had two hits and an RBI to pace Hartford. Jeremy Rivera had three hits and an RBI, while four Portland players each had two hits.
The Yard Goats open a 5-game series in four days at New Hampshire on Friday night at 6:35. LHP Jack Wynkoop will pitch for Hartford against RHP Jon Harris for the Fisher Cats. The game will be broadcast on AM 1410 WPOP and streamed on newsradio.1410.com and MiLB.com.
