Greg Allen Garners Weekly AFL Honors

Greg Allen has always been fast, as his 91 stolen bases across three levels over the past two seasons would attest. But it's his power that earned him attention this week.

The Indians' No. 19 prospect was named Arizona Fall League Player of the Week for the third week of play in the desert. On the bump, Cardinals 19th-ranked farmhand Austin Gomber earned Pitcher of the Week honors.

Allen enjoyed the first multi-homer game of his professional career Friday, blasting two long balls to lead Mesa past Peoria on Friday, 7-3. His .651 slugging percentage and 1.091 OPS through Monday lead the circuit, and he's tied for the AFL lead in home runs (three) with seven other players and tied for second in total bases (28) with Salt River's Travis Demeritte.

The speed hasn't left, however, as the 2014 sixth-round pick is also 5-for-6 on the basepaths. Those elite wheels also help him cover ground in center field, and his defensive skills earned him the Rawlings Minor League Gold Glove award this season.

After hitting .298/.424/.402 in 92 games with Class A Advanced Lynchburg, the 6-foot, 175-pound San Diego State product held his own in 37 contests with Double-A Akron, posting a .290/.399/.441 line with three home runs and seven steals in 13 attempts.

Gomber leads the AFL with three wins, 17 innings pitched and is tied for the strikeout lead with Salt River reliever Jared Miller with 19 whiffs. He allowed one run while striking out 10 in two starts last week to earn the award.

His second outing of the week came against the Rafters, in which he allowed two hits and an unearned run over five frames. The 2014 fourth-round pick's AFL performance is a continuance of his regular-season success, as he posted a 2.69 ERA and 116 strikeouts in 21 starts for Class A Advanced Palm Beach and Double-A Springfield.

In Gomber's last four starts, all with the Cardinals, he went 1-0 with a 1.40 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 19 1/3 innings.
