Hillcats 2014 Field Staff Announced

December 17, 2013

The Atlanta Braves have announced their minor league field staffs for the 2014 season. Returning to manage the Hillcats for a fourth consecutive season will be Luis Salazar. He'll be joined by a pair second-year returners, Hitting Coach John Moses and Athletic Trainer Joe Toenjes. Coming to Lynchburg for his first year as a Hillcat will be Pitching Coach Derrick Lewis.

No manager in Hillcats history had ever served three straight seasons in Lynchburg, and now Salazar will manage a fourth in the "Hill City." Salazar has led the Hillcats to the postseason in each of the last two seasons, and won the Carolina League Championship in 2012. He brings with him 13 years of major league experience as a player, and 2014 will be his 12th as a minor league manager.

Moses is back for his second season with the Hillcats and second within the Atlanta Braves organization. Prior to joining the 'Cats he served as a hitting coach at the Triple-A and Double-A levels. In 2011 he was named the Mike Coolbaugh Texas League Coach of the Year as the hitting coach for the Corpus Christi Hooks. Like Salazar, he has over a decade of experience in the big leagues, playing 11 major league seasons.

Lewis is coming to Lynchburg for the first time, but it will be his 11th season coaching within the Braves organization. He was originally drafted by the Braves in the 20th round in 1997. He spent six years pitching in the Braves minor league system, and was named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Year in 1999 after posting the second best ERA in the league as a member of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Most recently, Lewis has spent the last three seasons serving as the pitching coach for the Rome Braves, Atlanta's Class-A affiliate.

There will be familiarity in the training room as Teonjes rejoins the Hillcats for a second season as the athletic trainer. Teonjes is entering his fifth season in the Braves organization, previously working with the Gulf Coast League Braves.

The 2014 season is set to begin Thursday, April 3rd at City Stadium. The Hillcats will begin the season with a four-game home stand against the Frederick Keys. Season ticket reservations are currently being taken, while individual tickets are scheduled to go on sale in March.
