January 15, 2014

CORPUS CHRISTI - The 2014 Houston Astros Caravan, presented by Academy Sports + Outdoors and Blue Bell, hits town on Friday, January 24.

After stops in Victoria and Rockport the previous day, team president Reid Ryan, Hall of Fame broadcaster Milo Hamilton, pitching legend J.R. Richard, first baseman Chris Carter and outfielder Marc Krauss are scheduled to attend ceremonies between 8-8:45 a.m. at City Hall, 1201 N. Leopard. The city council and Mayor Nelda Martinez will welcome their guests and, following a brief address, participate in an outdoor Astros flag-raising.

The annual Astros Caravan Luncheon, sponsored by the Corpus Christi Caller-Times and ClearChannel Media + Entertainment, runs from 11:30-1:30 at the Port of Corpus Christi's Solomon P. Ortiz Center. Members of the Astros party sign autographs from 1-1:30. Advance tickets for the Astros Caravan Luncheon are $25 and available at the Whataburger Field box office or by calling 361-561-HOOK.

Tickets at the door are $35.

Before and after the luncheon, the caravan visits first responders at two local firehouses. The new Academy Sports + Outdoors location in Portland (US 181 N/exit Buddy Ganem) hosts an hour-long autograph session at 4:45.

The Houston Astros Caravan runs from January 20-27 "raising the flag over Astros Country" at 31 stops throughout Houston, Central and South Texas, Oklahoma City and Louisiana.

At each stop, fans and local ambassadors help Astros players and staff members raise an Astros flag over the cities that comprise "Astros Country" as the team gears up for Spring Training and the 2014 season.
