Davis: Hooks' Player of the Year

CORPUS CHRISTI - Third baseman J.D. Davis is the Hooks' Player of the Year for 2017, team president Ken Schrom announced Monday.

Davis, 24, was Corpus Christi's lone representative on the Texas League Postseason All-Star Team, released August 25. The Cal State Fullerton product, taken by Houston in the third round of the 2014 draft (75th selection overall), batted .279 with 21 home runs and 60 runs batted in over a span of 87 Hooks games.
When promoted to Triple-A Fresno on July 19, Davis topped Corpus Christi with 18 doubles and ranked among Texas League leaders in total bases (179; 1st), extra-base hits (39; 1st), slugging percentage (.510; 3rd), and RBIs (4th). He was first in home runs and ultimately finished second to San Antonio's Franmil Reyes (25), who played 48 more TL games. Davis completed the year rated first in league slugging percentage and was third in OPS (.850).
The Texas League Player of the Month for June (.343/7/23) hit .295 with five homers and 18 RBIs in 16 contests for the Grizzlies. He made his MLB debut on August 5 at Minute Maid Park against the Toronto Blue Jays. In 17 games as an Astro, Davis is batting .250 with four home runs and 17 runs batted in.
At 44 round-trippers in 213 games over parts of two Double-A campaigns, Davis is the Hooks' standard-bearer for career home runs. He shares the club single-game record of three (May 19, 2016 at San Antonio).
In addition to 73 2017 starts at third base, Davis served 10 games as Corpus Christi's designated hitter, made four starts in the outfield, and one at first base. His overall defensive percentage in 226 chances was .942.
