Forsythe Foils Hooks

June 3, 2014

MIDLAND - Blake Forsythe's two-out RBI single in the ninth inning Tuesday night handed the RockHounds a 4-3 walk-off victory over the Hooks at Security Bank Ballpark.

The result spoiled a fine start by Tommy Shirley, who retired the first 10 men he faced. Shirley permitted just two hits and one walk while striking out four over seven innings. The lone blemish was a solo shot by Josh Whitaker in the seventh.

Corpus Christi (29-28) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first against Drew Granier. Delino DeShields, Jr., worked a lead-off walk and moved to second on Nolan Fontana's base hit to right. Preston Tucker was next and served a ground ball thru the right side, scoring DeShields from second base. Jonathan Meyer plated the second run by hitting into a force play at second.

Granier settled in and allowed just one more hit until his exit with one away in the seventh. The RockHounds right-hander walked five and struck out seven.

Leading 2-1 in the eighth, pinch-hitter Carlos Perdomo coaxed a lead-off walk from Frank Gailey. One out later, the Hooks executed a hit and run as Rene Garcia's single to left pushed Perdomo to third. M.P. Cokinos sent him home with a line drive to left field for a 3-1 Corpus Christi advantage.

Midland (30-27) tied it in the home half with the benefit of just one hit. Tyson Perez relieved Shirley and allowed the first two to reach on a single and a walk, respectively. Andrew Robinson entered and got Forsythe to bunt a sharp ground ball back to the mound for the force at third. Billy Burns then worked a free pass to load the bases. A first-pitch breaking ball from Robinson plunked Hiroyuki Nakajima in the helmet, allowing the Hounds' second run to cross.

Max Muncy, batting third in the lineup, laced a line drive to third but Meyer made a tremendous catch for the second out. In the next at-bat, Josh Whitaker, ahead in the count 2-1, hit a sharp ground ball to third. Meyer mishandled the pick-up, allowing the tying run to score.

Corpus Christi squandered a scoring chance in the ninth. Fontana, who reached in five trips to the plate, doubled to open the inning. Tucker was walked intentionally, bringing Midland closer Seth Frankhoff into the game. Frankhoff (2-1) struck out two of the next three batters to earn the victory.

Robinson (4-1) pitched the ninth for the Hooks and got the first out quickly. Dusty Coleman was then hit with a 2-2 pitch and moved to second on a Baltimore Chop by Anthony Aliotti. This set the stage for Forsythe's heroics as a line drive into center scored Coleman from second base.

Corpus Christi sends lefty David Rollins (0-1, 2.84) to the hill in Wednesday's 6:30 tilt. Midland counters with Shawn Haviland (2-4, 3.78).
