CORPUS CHRISTI - Antonio Nunez scored on a one-out passed ball in the 10th to give Corpus Christi a 2-1 win over Frisco Sunday night at Whataburger Field before 4,935.
Clayton Cook (2-2), on to work the 10th, walked Nunez after a nine-pitch plate appearance. Nunez took second on a wild pitch and then advanced to third on Bryan De La Cruz's medium-depth liner to center fielder Jose Cardona.
The first offering to the next hitter, Dexture McCall, sent Nunez homeward. Jose Trevino was charged with the miscue.
Andrew Walter (1-0) faced the minimum over two innings for the victory. Riley Ferrell threw two relief blanks with three strikeouts, as did Frisco's Ricardo Rodriguez.
Outstanding starting pitching made for a late/tight scenario. Rehabbing Houston starter Collin McHugh, capped at six innings or 90 pitches during his fourth Hooks appearance, covered the half-dozen frames with just 69 pitches (48 strikes). The lone run on his watch was unearned. McHugh scattered four hits, walked one, and fanned two. He was the beneficiary of double plays in the fifth and sixth innings.
His opposition, Yohander Mendez, went an inning deeper, and was responsible for a run, six hits, a walk, and eight strikeouts. His pitch count was 99 (65).
The Hooks gave McHugh a run by staging a third-inning, two-out rally. J.D. Davis' 60th RBI came in the form of a single; Jason Martin scored the night's first run after doubling to right-center field.
A Royce Bolinger lead-off double, Michael De Leon's right-side ground out, and a throwing error on shortstop Jack Mayfield enabled Frisco to tally in the fifth.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa (seven games), Cardona (seven), and Trevino (six) extended RoughRiders hitting streaks. Davis led all players with three hits.
2015 American League Cy Young Award winner Dallas Keuchel, who pitched for the Hooks in 2010-11, starts for Corpus Christi Monday at 7:05 vs. Ariel Jurado (7-6). Keuchel returns to Corpus Christi on a rehab assignment.
