Hounds Walk Off With Series Opener

April 22, 2013

MIDLAND, TX - With two away in the ninth Monday night, Jeremy Barfield belted a 2-2 pitch from Carlos Quevedo well over the fence in left field, propelling Midland to a 2-1 victory at Citibank Ballpark.

Hooks starter Jake Buchanan shined thru five scoreless innings, walking one while fanning four.  He threw 46 of 69 pitches for strikes and induced eight ground-ball outs, lowering his ERA to 1.57

Quevedo (0-1) entered in the sixth and coaxed two quick outs before Anthony Aliotti swatted his second home run of the year, a no-doubt blast to left.

He held the Hounds (11-6) to just two hits leading up to Barfield's sky-scraping shot, including a pinch-hit double by former Hook Jake Goebbert.

Once again, Corpus Christi (9-8) struggled offensively.  The Hooks pushed across their lone run in the fourth.  Jonathan Meyer, who finished the night with two of his team's seven hits, singled thru the left side to open the frame.  Erik Castro chased him to third by chopping the first pitch from Sean Murphy down the left-field line.  Castro was thrown out at second, trying to stretch the hit into a double.  Rene Garcia promptly sent Meyer home on a single up the middle.  Both Garcia and Ben Orloff extended their hitting streaks to six games.

Murphy, making his Double-A debut, scattered five hits and three walks over 6.2 innings.

Corpus Christi had a golden opportunity to break the 1-1 tie in the eighth.  With runners at second and third and one out, Nate Long struck out Michael Burgess and escaped the inning unscathed when Meyer lined out sharply to right field.

The Hooks are averaging just 2.2 runs over their last 10 games.

Corpus Christi looks to right the ship tomorrow night when Nick Tropeano (0-2, 2.00) and Bobby Doran (2-0, 1.89) take on Josh Bowman (2-0, 2.40).  First pitch is 6:30.
