Streak Fizzles in Frisco

July 10, 2014

FRISCO - A sac fly by Odubel Herrera in the seventh inning was the difference Wednesday night as the RoughRiders dispatched the Hooks 4-3 in the series opener at Dr Pepper Ballpark.

The Hooks, whose win streak was snapped at six, are now 2-7 in the Metroplex this season.

Corpus Christi (10-9, 44-45) established a 1-0 lead in the first against Edwar Cabrera. Ruben Sosa lined a one-out single to left. Following a sac bunt by Delino DeShields, Jr., Jonathan Meyer, on a 1-2 pitch, sent a single thru the left side to drive in Sosa.

Frisco (10-8, 50-37) responded in the second with three runs off Michael Hauschild. Joey Gallo opened the frame with a walk and Tomas Telis cracked a base hit to right. Hanser Alberto placed a sac bunt down the third-base line. Catcher Rene Garcia threw wildly to first, allowing Gallo to score. With runners at second and third, Teo Martinez stroked a line drive into left, pushing the Riders ahead 2-1. Drew Robinson capped the rally with a sac fly to center.

From the third through the sixth, Cabrera limited the Hooks to three base runners.

With one away in the seventh, Garcia notched his third hit of the night with a double to left-center. Brandon Meredith was next and sent a single up the middle. Cabrera was then lifted for Will Lamb (2-1) who induced a pop up from Tony Kemp. Sosa followed a belted a 2-0 pitch over the head of Jake Skole in center field, scoring Garcia and Meredith to tie the game. Sosa was thrown out at third trying to stretch his double into a triple, ending the inning.

The Riders answered promptly when Teo Martinez doubled off David Rollins to open the home half. Rollins (2-3) then struck out Robinson but Patrick Cantwell managed a single over second, sending Martinez to third. Herrera lifted an 0-1 pitch to deep center, plating Frisco's fourth run of the night.

DeShields coaxed a lead-off walk in the eighth and then proceeded to steal second and third. Meyer struck out looking for the first out, bringing M.P. Cokinos to the plate. With the infield drawn in, Cokinos sent a sharp grounder to shortstop. Alberto made a tremendous pick and a whirling throw home. The tag applied by Cantwell was ruled in time by Derek Eaton on a bang-bang play at the plate. Leo Heras then singled to center, pushing Cokinos to third. Heras stole second, putting a pair in scoring position. Perdomo hit a slow-roller to third for the final out.

Corpus Christi left two more on base in the ninth and stranded nine on the night.

The series continues Thursday night at 7:05. Lefty Alex Claudio (1-0, 0.00) is slated to pitch for Frisco. Jordan Jankowski (2-3, 3.86) and Kyle Smith (3-2, 3.65) head to the hill for the Hooks.
