Hot Rods Drop Game 1 of Playoffs to Loons

Suspended game finishes with Hot Rods a loss away from elimination
September 9, 2016

Midland, MI - In a contest that took two days to finish, the Bowling Green Hot Rods gave up a season-high in hits and runs against the Great Lakes Loons in their 2016 Midwest League Playoff Opener during a 15-1 loss at Dow Diamond.

With the game suspended in the middle of the fourth inning on Wednesday night, the game continued on Thursday afternoon with the Loons scoring five runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings to roll to a victory.

Leading the charge for the Loons was catcher Jake Henson, who cranked out a pair of two-run doubles during the frame. Outfielder Gage Green had four hits and was a homer away from the cycle while first basemen Matt Jones cranked a two-run homer.

For the Loons, the 15 runs and 20 hits were season-highs while they were also the most that the Hot Rods pitchers have given up in each category this season.

The margin of defeat was the most for the Hot Rods since they lost 17-0 to the Fort Wayne TinCaps on the last day of the 2015 regular season.

For the Hot Rods, they got two hits and a run-scoring single in the seventh inning by outfielder Zacrey Law.

The Hot Rods will return to Bowling Green Ballpark to play game two of the series against the Loons and a possible series-deciding game three.

For game two, the Hot Rods will send lefty Genesis Cabrera to the mound while the Loons will counter with Vanderbilt-product Jordan Sheffield.

Game two will be played on Friday. If the Hot Rods win, game three will be played on Saturday. Both of those games will be played at 6:35 local time at Bowling Green Ballpark.
