WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY (May 10, 2022) —The Hudson Valley Renegades dropped the series opener to the Aberdeen IronBirds 12-4 on Tuesday night at Dutchess Stadium.

Aberdeen jumped in front in the top of the first against Hudson Valley starter Blane Abeyta (0-2), who allowed Colton Cowser to cross the plate on a wild pitch. Austin Wells responded with his fifth home run of the season in the bottom of the first, tying the score at one.

In the top of the second, the IronBirds surged ahead with five runs off Abeyta. Cowser was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in a run, Jacob Teter lined an RBI single, and TT Bowens drove in two with a triple.

Abeyta lasted two innings, allowing six runs on four hits, walking three and striking out one.

Aberdeen starter Jean Pinto maintained command in his four innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out six and walking three.

Hudson Valley showed life against Ignacio Feliz (3-0). Tyler Hardman drove in a run with a bases-loaded hit by pitch in the fifth inning and Wells banged a two-run double in the sixth — his third hit of the night — pulling the Renegades within two at 6-4.

The IronBirds answered with four in the top of the seventh. Bryan Blanton walked the first four batters he faced in the inning to force in a run. Charlie Ruegger entered and allowed an RBI single to Ramon Rodriguez. AJ Graffanino capped off the scoring with a two-run single to extend the Aberdeen lead to 10-4. All four runs were charged to Blanton.

In the top of the ninth, Rodriguez drove in a run with an RBI triple to right field and Graffanino brought him home with a groundout to make it 12-4 IronBirds.

Jake Prizina earned his first save with three hitless innings, striking out five and walking none.

Hudson Valley and Aberdeen play the second of a six-game series tomorrow night at Dutchess Stadium. RHP Matt Sauer (0-1, 4.29) takes the ball for the Renegades, while the IronBirds counter with RHP Houston Roth (2-0, 3.43). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
