Wagaman goes deep, extends on-base streak to 11 games in loss

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (May 17, 2022) The Hudson Valley Renegades dropped the series opener to the Brooklyn Cyclones 5-3 on Tuesday night at Maimonides Park. The loss extended the Gades’ losing streak to a season-long five games.

Brooklyn jumped ahead in the bottom of the third against Hudson Valley starter Blane Abeyta when Shervyen Newton slammed an RBI double to score Rowdey Jordan with the first run of the game.

The Renegades struck back in the top of the fifth against Colby Morris (1-1) when Eric Wagaman launched a towering solo shot to even the score at one. The blast was Wagaman’s second home run of the season, and extended his on-base streak to 11 consecutive games.

Brooklyn responded immediately in the bottom of the fifth. Jaylen Palmer led off with an opposite-field solo homer, and Jose Mena and Matt O’Neill ripped RBI doubles to give the Cyclones a 4-1 lead. The first two runs in the frame were charged to Abeyta (0-3), who lasted 4.1 innings, allowing three runs on four hits, walking two and striking out five.

In the top of the seventh, Hudson Valley crept closer against Reyson Santos. Carlos Narvaez singled, came around to score on a wild pitch and Trey Sweeney lifted a sacrifice fly to pull the Renegades within one at 4-3.

With runners at the corners in the bottom of the seventh, J.T. Schwartz grounded into a double play to bring Newton home and extend the Brooklyn lead to 5-3.

The Renegades threatened and brought the tying run to the plate in both the seventh and ninth innings, but Hunter Parsons closed out the victory for his first save.

Hudson Valley continues its six-game series with Brooklyn tomorrow afternoon at Maimonides Park. RHP Will Warren (1-2, 2.49) takes the ball Renegades. The Cylones have yet to name a starter. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m., with pregame coverage beginning on the Renegades Baseball Network at 11:45.

POSTGAME NOTES: Renegades relief pitchers Nelvin Correa and Charlie Ruegger both logged at-bats in Tuesday’s game after the team lost the DH due to a sub in the bottom of the fifth… This is the first five-game losing streak for Hudson Valley since August 31 – September 4, 2021, when it dropped five straight to Greensboro.
