WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY-Despite allowing only two hits, the Hudson Valley Renegades came up on the short end of the stick losing to the Staten Island Yankees 3-2 in 10 innings Thursday night at Dutchess Stadium. The Renegades are now 0-5 against the Yankees this season.
A little help by the Yankees allowed the Renegades to plate the game's first run in the second. With the bases loaded and two out, Staten Island catcher Carlos Narvaez tried to pick Renegades first-baseman Jacson McGowan off third. However, the throw went into leftfield for an error, which allowed McGowan to score and give the Renegades a 1-0 lead.
Staten Island came back in the fourth inning by plating two runs to take the lead. A leadoff walk to shortstop Eduardo Torrealba preceded a RBI double to left by designated hitter Kyle Gray to tie the game. It was the only hit the Yankees would get in regulation.
Later in the inning, runners stood at second and third with one out when rightfielder Junior Soto drove in a run on a groundout to third to give the Yankees the lead.
Hudson Valley would come back however, and tie the game in the fifth as rightfielder Marvin Malone drilled his second homerun of the year. It was a solo shot over the rightfield wall to tie the game at two.
The game remained tied into the tenth inning when the Yankees started the top-half with Gray at second and nobody out per the new international rules of minor league baseball regarding extra innings. Reliever Nick Sprengel got back-to-back strikeouts to start the inning, however Soto stood in with two away and dribbled a groundball single into rightfield to score Gray and give Staten Island the lead.
In the bottom-half, the Renegades put third-baseman Adrian Rondon at second, but closer Ron Marinaccio struck out the side in his only inning of work to end the game.
Getting the win for the Yankees was reliever Garrett Mundell (4-2) who tossed two scoreless innings on two hits, while striking out three. The tough-luck loser was Sprengel who fired four innings of relief, allowing the go-ahead unearned run on a hit with three strikeouts. The save by Marinaccio was his first of the season.
Hudson Valley had six hits in the game. Centerfielder Tanner Dodson paced the attach by going 2-4 with a double.
The teams combined to strike out 25 times with the Renegades striking out a season-high 14 times for the game.
The first-place Renegades now welcome the second-place Brooklyn Cyclones to town for a crucial three-game series at Dutchess Stadium beginning tomorrow at 7:05 in a battle for supremacy in the McNamara Division. There will be fireworks after the game. Right-hander Miller Hogan (2-1, 3.91 ERA) will be on the hill for Hudson Valley against fellow righty Briam Campusano (3-5, 4.98 ERA) for Brooklyn.
