INDIANAPOLIS – Bryse Wilson dazzled over 7.1 innings and fanned a season-high 10 batters en route to a dominant series-opening win for the Indianapolis Indians over the Memphis Redbirds on Tuesday night, 7-4.

INDIANAPOLIS – Bryse Wilson dazzled over 7.1 innings and fanned a season-high 10 batters en route to a dominant series-opening win for the Indianapolis Indians over the Memphis Redbirds on Tuesday night, 7-4.

Wilson held Memphis (38-29) to one run in 7.1 innings of work and was charged with another after he exited the ballgame. His 10 strikeouts marked the third time in his career that he has fanned double-digit batters in an outing, the last coming when he notched a career-high 13 strikeouts on Aug. 15, 2018 with Gwinnett vs. Louisville. The righty’s performance marked the first 10-plus strikeout game by an Indians (33-32) pitcher since Chase De Jong fanned 10 batters last season on May 5.

After a Luken Baker solo homer in the second to give the Redbirds the first lead of the contest, major league rehabbers Josh VanMeter and Kevin Newman teamed-up to even the score at one in the third. VanMeter drew a lead-off walk before Newman drove him in with a deep flyball to left field.

Ji-Hwan Bae ended the tie in the sixth when he sent home Mason Martin on a double to opposite field. In the following frame, the Indians would break open the game with a five-run seventh. Carter Bins sparked the offense with a leadoff double and scored on a sacrifice bunt by Jason Delay that forced a throwing error by pitcher Angel Rondon (L, 3-1). VanMeter singled in a run before back-to-back walks loaded the bases. A Rodolfo Castro sacrifice fly and RBI single by Travis Swaggerty added two more insurance runs before the inning concluded to extend the lead to 7-1.

A two-run homer by Paul DeJong in the eighth would inch the Redbirds within four runs of the Indians. The rally would fall short in the ninth after putting across a run off an RBI triple by Ben DeLuzio.

The Indians and Redbirds will meet again on Wednesday afternoon at 1:35 PM ET at Victory Field. RHP Osvaldo Bido (1-4, 5.28) will take the mound for the Indians and the Redbirds will counter with RHP Jake Woodford (0-1, 5.14).
