Burleson Named IL Exec. of the Year

Tribe VP & GM Helped Lead Tribe to Top MiLB Attendance
September 19, 2013

INDIANAPOLIS - The Indianapolis Indians have announced that Vice President and General Manager Cal Burleson has been voted as the International League's 2013 Executive of the Year. The accolade marks Burleson's second Executive of the Year honors after he previously won the award with the Tribe in 2000.

"The Executive of the Year Award was made possible because of the hard work of many people," Burleson said. "You have to begin with Max Schumacher and our Board of Directors for the vision and building of Victory Field, which is still the best Minor League ballpark in America. Our marketing department consistently presented our mission of providing Indians baseball as affordable and memorable family fun. Our ticket sales and corporate sponsorship department pursued relationships in a positive way, our operations department executed in a very professional manner and ARAMARK did a great job with concessions."

Under Burleson's leadership, the Indians led all 160 Minor League Baseball teams with their regular-season attendance of 637,579 fans (average of 8,980 per game), the fourth-largest total since the team moved to Victory Field in 1996. Indianapolis also set a single-season record with eight sellouts during the 2013 campaign to surpass their previous high mark of six capacity crowds in 1997. In addition, with Burleson at the helm, the Tribe notched its first back-to-back International League West Division championships in franchise history, before drawing Victory Field's largest playoff crowd of 11,327 patrons on Sept. 6.

"The Pittsburgh organization provided us with a division champion ballclub for the second year in a row," Burleson said. "All of these elements came together in a real team effort to give the Indianapolis Indians an outstanding year."

The 2013 record-setting campaign marked Burleson's 39th year with the Indianapolis Indians and his 16th year as General Manager. Along with serving in a dual-role as Vice President and General Manager, he was also elected to the Club's Board of Directors in February of 2012. Including the 2013 season, Burleson has now helped lead the Indians to an increase in annual attendance in each of the last four years.
