INDIANAPOLIS - Tyler Glasnow struck out 11 batters over seven innings of one-run ball as the Indianapolis Indians handed the Syracuse Chiefs a 2-1 defeat Friday night at Victory Field. Glasnow has now fanned 11 or more batters in six of his 11 starts for Indianapolis this season.
INDIANAPOLIS - Tyler Glasnow struck out 11 batters over seven innings of one-run ball as the Indianapolis Indians handed the Syracuse Chiefs a 2-1 defeat Friday night at Victory Field. Glasnow has now fanned 11 or more batters in six of his 11 starts for Indianapolis this season.
Indianapolis (65-53) won for the sixth time in its last seven games on the performance of its right-hander and two timely knocks by Danny Ortiz.
Glasnow's lone mistake over seven frames came on a two-out, 2-0 offering to Pedro Severino in the second. The Syracuse (45-74) catcher cranked his fifth long ball of the year out to left-center, giving the Chiefs their first lead of the series.
Indy responded in the fourth on back-to-back hits from Ortiz and Elias Díaz to knot the score at one. Ortiz reached second base with two down for his 25th double, and moments later, Diaz dumped a soft single into shallow right-center for his 25th RBI.
Two innings later, Ortiz delivered in the clutch again. With Max Moroff at second with two down, Ortiz lined a 1-2 pitch from Esmil Rogers up the middle to put Indy on top, 2-1.
Glasnow (8-0) capped his outing with his third 1-2-3 frame of the evening. He scattered five hits and one walk while the Indians improved to 10-1 in his 11 starts this season.
Angel Sánchez and Dovydas Neverauskas both allowed one hit in their single innings of work, but the Chiefs couldn't scratch across the tying run. Neverauskas fanned Severino to seal the win and his 12th save.
Rogers (1-1) surrendered two runs on eight hits over six innings pitched. He walked none and struck out five.
Kevin Newman and Diaz led the Indians with three hits apiece while Ortiz and Jordan Luplow both notched two hits to account for all of Indy's 10 base knocks.
The Indians and Chiefs play game three of the series Saturday night at Victory Field. The Tribe will send southpaw Steven Brault (9-5, 2.06) to the mound while the Chiefs will counter with righty John Simms (0-2, 7.88). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
