SALISBURY, Md. (June 12, 2017) - Joel Booker came through with a game-tying hit with two outs in the ninth, but the Intimidators ultimately fell to the Shorebirds in extra innings, 5-4 in 13 innings, on Monday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Kannapolis (33-28) fell to 3.0 games back of the first place Hagerstown Suns with a 4-game series against the division's top team opening on Tuesday.
In the bottom of the 13th, Ben Wright walked back-to-back batters with one out before striking out Jerry McClanahan. Ryan McKenna followed with a 2-out line drive to right field, scoring Gerrion Grim for the game-winning hit. Wright (1-5) took the loss, working two-thirds of an inning, while Delmarva's Matt Trowbridge (1-2) notched the win with a scoreless top of the 13th.
Kannapolis found itself down to its final strike with two outs in the ninth. Trailing 4-3 entering the inning, Antonio Rodriguez led off with a single, and Tyler Sullivan pinch-ran for him. Seby Zavala sacrificed Sullivan into scoring position, and Grant Massey's groundout moved the tying run to third base. Booker drove a ground ball up the middle to cash Sullivan for his fourth hit of the night.
Booker finished 4-for-6 with a home run (3), two RBI, and a run scored, while Seby Zavala added his team-leading 11th home run of the season. Both long balls came in the third inning as the Intimidators took an early 2-1 lead. The Shorebirds battled back with two runs in the home half of the fourth. Kannapolis tied the game in the seventh when Zach Remillard doubled, and Massey drove him in, but Delmarva reclaimed the lead in the eighth as Grim's double scored Frank Crinella for a 4-3 lead.
Blake Hickman, the White Sox seventh round pick in the June 2015 First-Year Player Draft, worked a career-high-tying 6 and 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked one before turning the ball over to the bullpen. Kevin Escorcia spun a scoreless innings, and Mick VanVossen allowed a run over 2 and 1/3 innings of relief. Mike Morrison, who was named a South Atlantic League Mid-Season All-Star last week, tossed 2 and 1/3 scoreless innings, striking out three and stranding the bases loaded to get out of the bottom of the 12th.
The Intimidators return to Kannapolis to wrap up the First Half starting on Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. against Hagerstown. Kannapolis sends RHP Jimmy Lambert (6-2, 2.39 ERA) to the mound against Hagerstown's RHP Sterling Sharp (3-3, 3.62 ERA) on Tuesday night.
