HAGERSTOWN, M.D. - The Hagerstown Suns (31-25) could not muster much offense against the Kannapolis Intimidators (21-36) Wednesday evening as they were swept in a double header by scores of 6-2 and 11-0. The second game saw three Intimidators pitchers throw a combined no-hitter.
RHP Braulio Ortiz set the pace for the game by pitching the first four innings, walking two batters and striking out six. RHP Adam Lopez (1-1) then took over and would end up getting the win for Kannapolis. Lopez tossed two innings, walking two batters and striking out one. RHP Joseph Dvorsky shutdown the Suns in the final inning, retiring the side in order to preserve the no-hitter. LHP Brett Mooneyham (1-1) took the loss for Hagerstown. Mooneyham pitched two innings, allowing three earned runs on one hit and four walks while striking out four.
Offensively, Kannapolis got off to quick start in game two. Second baseman Micah Johnson led off the game with a walk. After DH Jake Brown struck out, RF Jason Coats drew a walk, putting runners on first and second. Centerfielder Josh Richmond then drove home both runners with double. A wild pitch by LHP Brett Mooneyham advanced Richmond to third. He would come home on a sacrifice fly by catcher Brett Tanner, making it 3-0.
Another three-run inning was put up by the Intimidators in the third. Coats started the inning with a single. After a Richmond fly out Tanner doubled to put runners on second and third. Shortstop Michael Johnson then drove both runners in with a single to centerfield. First baseman Patrick Palmeiro followed up with a double down the left field line to bring home Johnson to put the Intimidators up 6-0.
With the score 7-0 in the sixth inning Kannapolis tallied four more runs. With runners on first and second Brown doubled in a run, followed up by a sacrifice fly by Coats to make it 9-0. Richmond then blasted a two-run home run to left-center field to set the final score at 11-0.
In game one Kannapolis jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. With two outs Coats reached base after being hit by a pitch. Richmond followed up with a double, putting runners on second and third for catcher Michael Marjama. Marjama then singled in both runners to open the scoring.
Leading 4-1, the Intimidators broke the game open in seventh inning with two more runs. With one out Micah Johnson struck out swinging but reached base on a passed ball as a result of the strikeout. Brown then proceeded to single to put runners on first and second. Following a Coats strikeout Richmond doubled both runners home to make it 6-1.
The Suns closed out the scoring in the seventh. With one out shortstop Stephen Perez singled and later advanced to second on a passed ball by Marjama. He then advanced to third on a single by DH Matt Foat. Catcher Pedro Severino's groundout allowed Perez to score making it 6-2.
LHP Jefferson Olacio (2-7) earned the win for Kannapolis. Olacio pitched a complete game, allowing one earned run on five hits and two walks while striking out five. RHP Dixon Anderson (4-3) suffered the loss for Hagerstown. Anderson worked 6.2 innings, allowing four earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out three.
The Suns will conclude their series with the Intimidators Thursday night. RHP Pedro Encarnacion (4-3) will take the hill for Hagerstown, making his tenth start of the season. He will be countered by RHP Euclides Leyer (2-6), who will make his twelfth start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
