Cubs Select Coghlan's Contract; Option Rosscup

Negrin loaned out to Mexico; Jackson activated

Nashville, TN - The Chicago Cubs activated RH Jake Arrieta from the disabled list and placed OF Ryan Sweeney on the DL with a strained hamstring today. In corresponding moves, the Cubs optioned LH Zac Rosscup to Iowa and selected the contract of OF Chris Coghlan from triple-A. The Cubs have also loaned Iowa RH Yoanner Negrin to the Mexican League and activated OF Brett Jackson from the disabled list.

Rosscup returns for his third stint with the I-Cubs. He opened the season with Iowa and is 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA (3ER/6.1IP) in five appearances. All three runs he allowed came in his last appearance on April 20 against Round Rock. In two stints with Chicago, Rosscup made two appearances and allowed one walk while striking out two in 2.2 scoreless innings. The Cubs acquired Rosscup with RH Matt Garza and OF Fernando Perez from the Tampa Bay Rays in a eight-player deal, January 8, 2011. The Rays drafted Rosscup in the 28th round of the 2009 draft out of Chemeketa (OR) Community College.

Coghlan signed a minor league free agent deal with the Cubs in January. in 24 games with the I-Cubs this year, he batted .243 (17-for-70) with five doubles, six RBI, six runs scored, and six stolen bases. He also drew 13 walks to post a .379 on-base percentage. Coghlan was originally a supplemental first round pick (36th overall) in the 2006 draft by the Florida Marlins out of the University of Mississippi. Coghlan was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 2009 after hitting .321 (162-for-504) with 31 doubles, nine homers, 47 RBI, and 84 runs scored in 128 games with the Marlins.

Negrin is 0-1 with a 3.60 ERA (6ER/15.0IP) in six appearances with Iowa this season. Negrin defected from Cuba and signed with the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent on July 25, 2011. Negrin spent most of the 2012 season on loan to Tabasco in the Mexican League before making his debut with Iowa with thee starts late in that season. Negrin is 4-8 with a 4.04 ERA (62ER/138.0IP) in 43 games (17 starts) with Iowa over the last three seasons.

Jackson has been on the disabled list since April 16 with a right oblique strain. He is batting .121 (4-for-33) with a triple, a home run, and two RBI in 11 games with Iowa this year.

The Cubs play game two of a four-game series in Nashville tonight at 6:35. RH Kyle Hendricks (3-1, 4.11) will start for the Cubs against RH Johnnie Lowe (0-0, 0.00) for the Sounds.
