Game Notes for Monday, September 2

TODAY'S GAME: The Iowa Cubs and Nashville Sounds wrap up the 2013 season with the final game of a four-game series. The Sounds are the Pacific Coast League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.  

CALL IT A COMEBACK: With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, SS Edwin Maysonet ripped a two-run single to center field that tied the game, and 1B Greg Rohan belted a solo homer leading off the top of the 10th to give the Cubs a 3-2 win over the Sounds last night. It was just the second time this season that the Cubs won a game when trailing after eight innings. The other was July 4 at Albuquerque when Tim Torres hit a game-tying, two-run homer in the ninth before the Cubs also won in the 10th. Those are the Cubs' only two extra-inning victories of the season as the team has posted a 2-8 record in free baseball. Dustin Molleken gave up the base hit to Maysonet and was charged with a blown save. Travis Webb (2-6) gave up the homer to Rohan and suffered the loss. RH Marcus Hatley (3-2) held the Sounds scoreless in both the ninth and 10th innings to earn the win.

FULL CIRCLE: IF Greg Rohan has missed most of this season due to a back injury suffered while playing winter ball in Mexico after last season. Last night was his 11th game for the Cubs this year after playing in seven games at Rookie Mesa on rehab. His home run last night was his first since August 27, last season. That home run was hit at Greer Stadium in Nashville off Sounds' pitcher Brian Baker. Rohan finished second in the Cubs' organization with 21 home runs between three levels in 2012.

FINISH UP STRONG: OF Dave Sappelt singled in his first at-bat last night and fnished 1-for-4 with a walk. He has hit safely in a season-high nine straight games. During this streak, Sappelt is batting .371 (13-for-35) with three doubles, a home run, seven RBI, and six runs scored. OF Julio Borbon entered on defense in the ninth inning last night and singled in his only plate appearance in the 10th, extending his hitting streak to six straight games. He is batting .353 (6-for-17) during this stretch, which marks his longest hitting streak since joining Iowa on August 7. OF Ty Wright was 2-for-5 with a run scored last night out of the leadoff spot. The team is 4-0 when he bats leadoff and he is hitting .438 (7-for-16) with three doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored out of the top spot.

VS. NASHVILLE: The Sounds lead this series 2-1, but the Cubs lead the season series 9-6. The Cubs will win the season series over the Sounds for the first time since 2008. The Sounds had won the season series each of the last four seasons and 11 of the first 15 years the clubs have been in the PCL. The Cubs finished 7-1 at home while the Sounds won three of four at Greer Stadium, May 28-31. Last night's win ended the Cubs' six-game losing streak at Greer. Last year, the Sounds won the season series 10-6, including a 7-1 mark in Nashville. This is the first time in PCL play that the Cubs won the home portion of the season series in consecutive seasons. The Sounds lead the all-time series 124-98, including a 69-41 mark at Greer Stadium.

ROSTER SHUFFLE: The Cubs have set a franchise record with 166 transactions so far this season, not including any more players that may be called up to Chicago for September following today's game. The old record was set last season at 153. The I-Cubs have used 62 different players this season, including 33 different pitchers.

THE BROKEN ROAD: The Cubs have set a franchise record for road losses at 22-49 on the road this year. The previous record was 48 set in 1981 (20-48), and matched in 1989 (25-48) and 2000 (24-48). The Cubs will finish with the worst road record in the league for the third straight season. The Cubs were 26-46 in 2011 and 24-44 in 2012.

SAVINGS PLAN: RH Brian Schlitter earned his 19th and 20th saves of the season, July 27-28 at home against Omaha. He is sixth in the league in overall saves and is second behind Brian Gordon (21) of Sacramento for the most saves in the PCL since he joined Iowa from double-A on May 27. Schlitter is tied with Jim Bullinger (1993) for fourth on Iowa's single-season saves list and tied with Laddie Renfroe (1987-88, '90-92) for fourth on the franchise's career list with 33. With one more save, he will tie Michael Wuertz (2002-04, '06, '08) and Bullinger (1991-93) for second on the career list. With two more, he would tie Blake Parker (2009) and Marc Pisciotta (1997) for second on the single-season list. Parker (2008-13) is the career leader with 41.
